Uhm...the thing I learned that was really a breakthrough is that value (how light/dark) is way more important than color. I don't actually know much about color relationships but having solid values will make things "pop" regardless of hue.

Ah okay, I understand. That seems pretty simple, but it definitely makes sense.
Do you use any of the photoshop adjustment layers, like the curves or levels?

Maybe it's a just a gun carrier boy, carrying the gun for his bigger master. Like stewards carried knights' shields and tended their armor and horses.

The perspective then makes sense; the POV is by his master, a bigger and a taller person.

I kinda imagined it as just peering down from the edge of the crumbling roof structure of some temple he's in. I like that interpretation though!
