This piece is most dedicated to the age-old phenomenon of the Fifth Column, which got its modern name during the Spanish Civil War, most specifically when Nationalist General Emilio Mola, told a journalist in 1936 that as his four columns of troops approached Madrid, a "Fifth Column" of supporters inside the city would support him and undermine the Republican government from within.
Likewise, for many people, there is a very powerful lure to the idea of being on the winning team...
"I, for one, welcome our alien, insect soon-to-be overlords with open arms!"
Perhaps the most florid recent example of such perfidiousness is the phenomenon of campus hipsters rushing over to the Middle East to join the ISIS/daesh Jihad.
