I read the full story yesterday, and it gave me a lot to think about at work today.
There are a lot of still unanswered ethical and philosophical questions concerning a self-conscious artificial intelligence.
Can a robot have secrets? (Not pre-programmed by the corporation who made it, but decided by itself)
If you asked a robot "can you tell lies?" and it answers "no, I can't" would it be the truth?

I thank you kindly for having taken the time. The main themes of this story were for isolation, abandonment and self deconstruction on a more or less literal basis. In that sense, I was trying to portray a more emotional set of points without going overboard not saturating the points with the " BUT YOU ARE A ROBOT " perspective. However, do consider picking up on Machine 2 as I release the pages, which will be more focused on such dilemmas of philosophy and ethical concerns in that world. Do be good now.
I'm a big fan of Star Trek TNG which also brought up this subject with Data the android. It's kind of fascinating to think about; in a sense, our civilization as of now would be incapable of handling the responsibility that comes with such technology. As soon as we let AI become self-conscious, will these machines consider themselves slaves?
I not only believe that TNG pressed this issue but that Voyager also continued to add said pressure and considerations for all forms of artificial sentience. It always seems a rather devious balancing when it comes to the treatment of the being in question when they are deemed either a tool or resource for disposal. In our current social progression Larger cultures in our world would most likely be in favor of ourselves as masters without equal in unification of our species and even then many do best to advocate a splintering in that unity.
Some seldom contemplate other's worth, and disassociate empathy for race, religion, sexuality, gender, etc. One can only imagine how we would react society to society if suddenly animals such as say...cattle..were to suddenly express themselves and develop primary linguistics and the ability to reason on a human level let alone share our varied philosophy. You see it will always come down to a simple pattern ( or code line, hah! ) of thought: We are human, we are intelligent, we have worth. I am human, I am intelligent, I have worth. I am more human, I am more intelligent, I have more worth than that human or animal. That is the pattern of ego and fear. Thus that beautiful dissonance of moral and/or ethical behavior in favor of the belief that beings that are different no matter how similar, are beneath the same treatment, rights, or privilege. Or shall I also say morals are redefined for personal or even spiritual security " They are treated this way for the good of others or so and so. " etc., etc.
This does not speak for every culture nor individual however there are many structured tests, programs and behavioral studies, and oh how I could recommend some if you are so inclined, that talk further of this human condition, line of reasoning, and general phenomena of theory how humanity on a scale than individual basis, would react to either emerging sentience either on par or above our reasoning.
