Before I even met
justdoug in 2000 I saw his art on VCL and drew this vixen based on a picture of Pup or Pandora. The file name on this was "winger" so Doug saw it and knew of me in the early years. Sort of. Later on I would hang out at his place and draw in the studio quite a bit, and he gave me tips on making faces more symmetrical which was tricky for me. He helped everyone he met.

He was such a big part of my teenage years. I pretty much modeled my character after his depiction of Pandora, and would check his VCL page every day. I talked to him once, and despite breaking my teenage heart for a possible commission, he was very gracious and nice. He had an imagination and wit that I think is really lacking in contemporary furry art.
Doug was the furry porn equivalent of Mr. Rogers... I have literally never heard anyone say anything bad about him.
Doug from all reports was very likeable, and despite what he drew, was a very normal down to earth guy.
Hell, even the threads on 4chan's /d/ and /co/ boards discussing his death are keeping pretty damn civil and sharing fond memories of the guy, and 4chan's normally rabidly vicious about anything furry, porn or not.

One of the elements the 2nd generation of fans tends to take for granted was how free the first generation artists were with their tips and suggestions. Whether learning to draw or color, they would always offer insight, suggestion, on ideas that would sever to encourage you to do more and improve while never talking down to you.
Again another found memory of a good man.

You caught some of Doug's wicked sense of humor. His IHOP has stuck with me for years for it's humor and crass sense of sophistication.

I remember that piece. It has lost none of its cute charm. It is wonderful that Doug took the time to help you improve. There is nothing better than learning directly from an artist one admires.
I was stuck in a rut and I received more useful artistic instruction from Shon Howell at Antarcticon(in San Antonio) in 15 minutes than I had in all my high school art classes.
Sincerely,

I have been following the updates and am still very saddened to hear about this. I never knew of his existence prior, sadly, but it is evident he impacted not only so many individuals but this fandom as a whole.
A wonderful old piece that I think makes a lovely dedication to him now!
