Full moon on a cloudy night. The street lamp would alternate between lights, slowly dimming out with each transition. Timing was fun.

The key is having a sturdy tripod, vs. a $25 one from Walmart. If you're doing a longer exposure, the momentary movement of the tripod when you first take the shot isn't going to show up in your photo. Only periodic or steady movement will be clear.
I use a cable release when shots will be longer than 30 seconds, but I've done it by hand in bulb, and they're usually pretty clear. Your in-camera timer will always work too. :)

I want a cable/wireless release, but yeah, I often use the timer.
it's just...an extra ten seconds that I can't usee.
also, it'd be cool for lots of things.
but yeah. the pod i have is an old monster. goes about six feet tall, metal tubes...it's very sturdy. the kind of thing you could bludgeon somebody with.
