that's not Mickey Mouse ;). I've never understood how it's possible to domesticate rat's. I understand it's a pet rat wich you purchased at a pet store. jest ive no idea how it's possible to get them used to people. my dealings with rat's this big and bigger is a lot less pleasant than yourself. my pore 12+ year old cat who has no teath had a run in with 1 a bit bigger than this a while back. Still don't know how it got in the house in the middle of the winter and was jest the 1 little blogger, causing havoc for a couple weeks wear she wood every so often get sight of it.i got lucky. I personally never got bitten.she did at some point, managed to deal with it despite having no teeth cat had a hell of a time add to it the kind of chasing the pair of them to try and catch it and get it out of the house.did not want the cat massing with it cats way too old. Personally, not a cat person it's my late mothers cat but still don't want the cat dealing with things like that.
shes cute and all but pat rat's still make me think of getting bitten. I wouldn't be surprised if there's people that have pat Neutra Rats if you're familiar with the species? they ended up getting into Louisiana. At some point, and they're having a real problem with them now for about 15 years where there a foreign invader. They are literally the creature that's Created the myth about giant rats in New York. In fact, those giant rat sightings. I have always been suspicious. Maybe Neutra Rats because they can survive just about anywhere's.
They are a member of the rodent family and sort of look like a cross between a rat and your junkyard Friday cat. Often, they are mistaken for cats over in Louisiana at night. Some of them that have been caught and weighed were between 40 and 50 pounds. If memory serves me from the documentary they had on a while back. Their population has been growing really badly and their a invasive species to the point that Louisiana has been trying to encourage people to hunt them at night. Don't get me wrong they are the least bit menacing looking till you realize they're a member of the rat family and their roughly the size of a raccoon lol. It's not hard to mistake one for the cat. Given their massive size.thay can kill dogs and cat's and thar huge. I forget the other name for them . They've got a couple of different scientific names. Was a documentary about them on a while back. I originally heard about them back in 2003 on another documentary.

Rats as a species are incredibly social, and have some similarities to wolves where you will end up with an Alpha Rat. It is because they are social that they actually make such great pets. To get where they are however has come down to breeding them to be so. It is possible with wild rats if you get one at a young age to semi-domesticate a wild rat, but they tend to be temperamental. Wild rats are far different from the ones you will get from a pet-shop or a breeder. Wild rats are aggressive and mean and cause a lot of damage. Some of it comes from the fact they are trying to survive and many things see them as food. I have had 10 rats over the years and have never been bitten even once. The only time one hurt me was when it decided to groom my head and pull one of the hairs out, hardly a complaint against them. I have also had a wild rat get into my house and I had NO interest in keeping it around.
The reason for rats winding up domesticated was sort of two fold. There was a rat catcher in the olden days who would keep the odd-colored ones, and study and breed them. These interesting looking rats were then sold to people as pets. The other half came I want to say in the 30's when scientists started to use them for experiments. They were trying to breed what is the icon white lab rat, and they learned that they were very social and loved to play with the scientists. It was from this that some people began to keep them as pets and slowly grew momentum. I would say only within the past 30 years have they really exploded as a popular pet.
I know someone in Mississippi and Louisiana that has/had a Neutra as a pet. Most I've heard is they are kinda grumpy, but not much beyond that. They aren't a mainstream or common pet. I saw a few wild ones when down in Alabama and Mississippi, but not quite as adorable as pet rats.
If talking about giant rats, another option could be the Gambian Rat. These are rats native to Africa and they to get very large. There are people who keep those as pets, but their legal status as pets in the US changes a lot. When they were made illigal many people let them go, and this has caused them to become a problem. I read that they were becoming a nascence in Florida. Last I heard is they are illegal if brought from africa, but legal to own if they were born in the united states. This species has an incredible sense of smell and are used in place of bomb sniffing dogs, mostly for finding landmines since they wouldn't be heavy enough to set them off. There are some cases of them used for drug sniffing as well.

can you imagine somebody at airport security with a 10 too . 40 pound rat on leash with 1 of those special harnesses and that airport security Waldo on the sides lol . Come to think of it that might actually be more of a deterrent than just the dogs. How many drug smugglers are more scared of rat's then drug sniffing dogs? ive seen Neutra rats and definitely couldn't imagine somebody keeping one as a pet. Those things are massive and basically make your average rat look like a little kitten, they will do the same kind of damage but on a much larger scale and from what I understand they are very aggressive. I don't have anything against that rats. I just can't help that part of me automatically identifies them on-site with their non-domesticated partner. It's just the whole biting thing gives me the creeps. Been pretty lucky. Over the years not to have much rodent problems. I'm pretty sure the last one that got in the house got in my bed a few times. Not something you want to wake up and feel crawling around in the blankets.
