Creaks and groans echoed through wooden halls, the windows rattled but remained absolutely still. A silent wail crept through the halls of an old estate. Air became cold, pipes banging as the metal realigned. All was not well within this home, something was very wrong. The disturbances however soon came to a quick end, the house began to settle just as quickly as it had been disturbed. Silence fell upon the halls, although a lamp flickered on in the hall. Steps thundered across the wood in a hurry A door flung upon and eyes fell upon a quiet, distressed figure in a white bed.
The steps slowed, closing the door behind them. Only the faintest light coming in from the hallway, illuminating small portions of the room. It was a large bedroom with huge windows spanning the wall opposite the door, dark red curtains pulled over them. A mirror rested in one corner, nestled between two small oak dressers.
Centered against the wall, on the left facing the windows was a large queen sized beds. Large fluffy pillows for one to rest their head against and a thick blanket to keep the sleeper warm. Resting within was a sad sight, a weakened girl. Resting next to the bed a variety of machines gave off soft beeps, displaying numbers in dull light so as to not turn the room in a bright display. A red line crawled across one of the screens, showing peaks and valleys as it followed her heart.
This young girl was a lynx, her eyes a dulled green, bags underneath due to a struggle with sleep. Black hair flowed from her head, coming to a stop level with her chest atop the blanket. A shadow was cast over the young weakened figure and a soft voice whispered in the night. “It's all right Cassandra, I'm here. Daddy is here for you.”
The bedridden lynx's eyes drifted to the right, she kept her head facing the ceiling. She had just awoken from an intense nightmare, many of the details she could not recall. There had been fire falling from the sky, that much had been clear to her. “I... I just had a nightmare...” She looked into her father's aged eyes, a weary and tired figured. Grayed hairs standing out among the black, many sleepless nights spent looking out for his sick daughter. There were many hours where he had been awoken by the screams of her sleeping mind, an unbearable pain he couldn't possible imagine the feeling of.
A had was placed to her forehead, lifting the girl's hair and gently he checked for a fever, eventually settling on just brushing the hair from her eyes. “Just a nightmare...” He whispered before looking on towards the various medical equipment lining her bedside. Cassandra's father stared silently into them, almost as if the older lynx was looking beyond the machines, to a time when they hadn't been there or perhaps into an imaginary reality where they never were.
He could still recall the many years ago when he and his wife had discovered their young daughter lifting small toys with her mind, soon playing with other things. Water shifted, doors opened and a sweet song played from the young feline's mind. However it was not to be something of wonder and mystery, the months where they spent their time trying to teach their young girl to use her new found abilities in a secretive and peaceful manner in their estate home soon turned sour. Cassandra had been only eight when it all began, less than a year after she had discovered her psychic abilities and in that time the hell crept into the household.
The silent songs played from her mind made the nearby halls around her room feel like they were twisting and groaning like a haunted mansion from some horror movie. It felt as if she was screaming and even though her parents swore they were woken up by their screaming daughter, there had been no such call. Glass cracked, plates slid off the table shattered forcefully against the walls. The young lynx found herself without control, and then suddenly one day it had all stopped.
Not long after she had turned nine, Cassandra simply collapsed. Barely able to move or speak, exhausted despite little exertion. The lynx became bedridden quickly. Doctors had been called to the estate, all of them hounded to find out exactly what had happened and only then, when the testing had begun did the lynx's psychic abilities reawaken.
There had been no destruction. The occasional object floated in the house. Water was disturbed as it left a faucet or hose, only to soon continue on it's path. The house however, was still a saddened place. It was a building that produced depression and it seemed to only increase in it's haunted tendencies as time went on, but the building showed no structural change. It was then a few of the doctor's had come to the conclusion that Cassandra never really had control of her psychic powers.
In truth, as the years went on it had been discovered that the reality of the situation was quite dire to the lynx's health. Cassandra's psychic powers were slowly killing her. No estimates on how long she had to live had been given, but the nineteen year old lynx had managed to make it to early adulthood. Having to live through a barrage of homeschooling, a limited social life with anyone in the outside world, medical treatment and assistance in getting her body in shape. Although she still often found herself feeling weak and tired, her mind draining her.
“Do you need anything Cassie?” Her father's words were soft and audible once again, a light kiss placed on her forehead. For a moment she pondered it, there were so many things that she wanted right now. So many things that she needed, all of which the universe was cruel enough to deny her. However she could not deny te twisted sense of guilt that radiated from her father and mother every time they were near her these past few years.
What had they done? Had she done something? She was not sure what a sick girl could do, one in a world where many of those out there had fancy powers and abilities, while unlike them her own were slowly sucking her dry of life.
“Could I get something to eat please...?” Her voice was still weak, but she closed her eyes, breathing deep. Perhaps a decent meal would make her feel better, even if it was something small in the early hours of the morning, long before the sun had shown itself to their estate.
She didn't see her father nod, but the soft footsteps and the sound of the door opening let her know that he had made his exist. Although he would soon return with food in hand for his beloved daughter. Cassandra's eyes opened once more, and slowly she pressed down into her sheets, lifting herself up just enough to slide back onto her pillows for support.
Her green eyes moved over the sight of her walls, decorated with pictures of her family, but those were drowned out by the assortment of things on the shelves. Old family trinkets were there sure, but the items that took up the most space upon her walls were the assortment of superhero memorabilia. Posters, action figures, movies and a few comic books here and there. It was something that she had become obsessed with growing up with her sickness. A variety of heroes. The ones of fiction were of course always something to read and watch in awe, and many times her parents had worked hard to get various comic artists or actors to sign her comics and movie cases.
But the ones that inspired even more wonder were the real ones out there. Newspaper clippings dotted around the posters and shelves, some of them decades old talking of heroes that had since died or retired. Some of them speaking of events in the more recent years, heroic acts, mighty battles among the concrete jungles of the twenty first century. Lives saved, battles won, wars and loves lost.
This is what she wanted to be most of all. One of them.
Her eyes light up as they focused on one of the largest posters, although she had not been entirely sure where the poster had originated from it was a well crafted item. All digital artwork of course, made entirely in America and shipped to her but it was beautiful. Cassandra focused on the blue of the lynx's outfit before wandering up to her face, looking deep into the mismatched green and purple eyes of the heroine that was portrayed in the artwork, the Mighty Cyber-Lynx. One whose signature she had yet to get, as her father put it, it was 'a lot more difficult to get the signatures of real heroes instead of actors, since the real ones were a lot harder to get a hold of for such things.'
The thought however was not a disappointment. Instead the lynx was pleased that such a heroine was out there saving the day and likely being a total badass while she was at it, but it was there in that thought that rested the envy. Cassandra would give anything to be in control, to go out into the world and save the day, fight evil and protect people.
“One day. One day that will be me out there, fighting too.”
