Offline Tigerdile Animation!
Did you know that
tigerdile has the option to let you use animated GIF's for your offline image? When you're not streaming, have a little fun with some animation in the form of animated GIF's. What clever things can you come up with?
I did this welding one for fun. It was a challenge to get a seemingly random pattern that had welding sparks, bright light, and shifting silhouettes. I have some other ideas in mind now to try.

It boiled down to four cels. One with normal lighting and no FX, then three more with various FX added and shadows to give it the proper uneven / random feel to it. It was uploaded to an online GIF maker where I was able to adjust timing between cels and how many were in the sequence. I think there's about 16 or so cels total in different combinations.
As for the cels, the FX cels had numerous layers- Lineart, foreground, flats of the character, silhouette, sparks, glow, and lightening/screening over the flats for the character for the proper flash highlight. I had to assemble all those into the four primary cels. It helps to do each layer by number- Linework 1, Flats 1, Foreground 1, etc. Then I could bundle them as needed.
It took about 2 hours of fiddling around, but I learned and will be doing more of these. Should be able to get some basic movement involved next.

That is soooo cool. My first thought was to try to create an animation of my character "Mr. Foxy" watching the pistons and linkages of a small vertical steam engine going up and down, but the more I worked it out in my head the more complicated the one second's worth of animation became. (Cussed Corliss linkages.) Anyway, this animation is so simple and effective, plus it looks like something your character would do.
I do weld for fun. The Triumph Spitfire project has me doing a lot of bodywork and rust repair (www.spitui.com - Go visit!). I've been pondering making some simple silhouettes out of flat 18 gauge steel or so with the plasma cutter and put them on a base for art projects / commissions. Always more things to try.
The cycle of a piston would be a relatively easy one to do, even with GIF makers. I think eight frames would do it. The more frames, the smoother it will be of course.
