Today my mom brought me a beanie she wasn't going to wear and my sister told me to do something with it - so I made a little present for RavenWorks, since he mentioned wanting one, and the color worked!
I still wanna see if I can get ridda that weird lump on the left side of his head... I guess that's why I usually sew these myself. 8D

Hehe, you're right! :D RavenWorks' part-time persona, or at least his icon is Raphael the Raven. :D He actually has a collie form, and is developing other animal forms too, but I always simply took his name and turned him into the Raven. 8D But yes! It's just a shame his boss level isn't until much later in the game! It was so cute and silly, I never got that far when I used to rent it. :3
Indeed. Actually, World 5 was my absolute favorite in the whole game. I replayed those levels more than any others in the game. That is, unless you count the endless times I had to REPLAY the "Extra" and "Special" levels that open up once you get all 100's. Those are a PIA!
Raphael's castle is so amazing in that you are like ascending it amidst a bright, full moon night. Throw in the fun part you get to do with the Yoshi-Train and the ultimate with Raphael in orbit and you got one rockin' level.

Hehe, I still haven't been able to replay it very much... is that the same level with the yoshi skis? :B And someone else mentioned those special levels to me... I still haven't gotten them. ;O;
It's really pretty from what I remember! And I love the boss fight. 8D I think it's really sweet that the other little ravens were still in Yoshi Story, running around on his little moon like a tribute to him. :D

I agree with you there, Oxnard. I just wish Raphael would've made an apperance in "Yoshi's Story." That game had so much potential and, sadly, I think it got shafted by players way too quickly for its "demeanor." What were your thoughts?
Oh, as I do get off topic easily, you are right in the level Raphael shows up in. It is the skiis level. The world also features a reall cool, min-boss in world 5-4 named "Sluggy the Unshaven." There's nothing like a slime-ball with a 5 o'clock shadow. Huzzah!

Hehe, yeah, he would have made a good boss, or something more than just a character you pass by really quickly! D:
Yeah... I remember after Yoshis Story a lot of gamers said yoshies were too weak and cute (well they were supposed to be babies in that game), especially when it came to Smash Brothers where you fight off a lot of yoshies like nothing. Maybe it didn't help that other people like myself could beat the game in a day and move onto something tougher... it really did have a lot of potential! I still really liked it, though I guess a lot of people weren't too into it or supportive. What about you? :3
That level always sticks out. :D I'll be sure to play it again when I get the chance too. I really love how unique all the different yoshi game bosses are... whether it's yoshis iland or yoshis story, or whatever else there is, it's usually a really fun time. :D

That's what makes a Yoshi game a Yoshi game. The overall "fun" of playing through it and doing all sorts of colorful, and fun, things. To this day, "Yoshi's Island" is still my all-time favorite game. I doubt any game will ever change my opinion either.
As for "Yoshi's Story," I got sad as the game gradually came to fruition. Back when it was "Yoshi's Island 64," I thought "Wow! It's going to be Yoshi's Island but with AWESOME graphics." Then, they started to seemingly take things away from it until we got the end product we did.
Not that, in the end, it made it a bad game. However, as you pointed out, it made Yoshies look like they were meant for toddlers instead of serious gamers. Heck, I still have the Nintendo Power issue tucked away where they, in their segment about the game say, "Yoshi's Story is a game about babies, but not for babies." Sadly, the stigma never seemed to leave it.
There was another issue, too, that you may or may not know. When it was first coming out, they were thinking of naming the "Tree" that the baby Yoshies are after "The Tree of Mirth." However, they instead went for "The Super Happy Tree." I think if they would've stuck to "Tree of Mirth" it would've helped give the game a more "mature" feel. Though, if you like twisted humor, one could go as far as saying that the fruits on the tree act almost like some sort of hillucinagetic drug. I mean, do you see what happens when Yoshi eats that Heart Fruit? Whoooaaaaahhhh is an understatement. <LoL!>
Sorry for the lengthy response. However, as my hay-day as a site host was before and around "Yoshi's Story's" release, I made it a point to know all I could about it and advocate for it as much as I could. Yep, yep, yep!

Hehe, I think those of us that gave Yoshi's Island a try really loved and enjoyed it! The sequel's pretty different from SMW, but it's still really amazing in it's own way, and to a lot of people, probably even better than the game before it. :D
I know what you mean though! Whenever games came out for the 64 or new systems, you'd think it was gonna be all that and a bag of chips, since the original was so cool. But reality showed it was more like a whole new game and story, kinda related to the games before it. I'm still glad it was fun and unique even though it wasn't really what most of us expected.
I didn't hear about the Tree of Mirth! I think that would have made them seem a lot less cutesy. SUPER HAPPY! :D I think the one we ended up with kept them more upbeat and positive like yoshies seemed to be, but I think Mirth definitely sounds more respectable. :B I giggled at your Whoooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh~! though. 8D
It's okay, it's fun to talk, especially about old games like these! (:

Yep, yep, yep! I love reliving the classics with someone who can appreciate them.
Overall, in the case of "Yoshi's Story," I think it deserves the most kudos for its dedication to being "unique." Sure it wasn't a hardcore sequel to Yoshi's Island. However, the fact they renamed it to Yoshi's Story covered all the bases on that little issue.
More on the unique issue, the one thing they were always proud of in the magazines was how, for a 64-bit game, they were going to go with it being a 2D platformer. In a world so crazed over 3D it was indeed a daring concept. The fact they put all the extra energy that would normally be committed to a 3D engine to some really nifty graphics was also an A+ effort. I really liked how each level had themed designs like how the beach areas looked like you were walking on hacky-sacks or, in the underwater levels, everything looked so plush.
Another thing that Yoshi's Story showed is how, after the days of SNES, people stopped caring about getting High Scores for the sake of getting a high score. I remember the e-mails I'd even get from people asking why they'd have a "useless" point system.
In sum, Yoshi's Story was a prime example of how times in the world of gaming were changing and how people had gotten so obsessed with goal oriented and/or 3D games. It's like, in some cases, people forgot that a game could just be "fun" to play without having to be tied down by objectives all the time.
What are your thoughts? :)

Hehe, reliving the classics in conversation is fun! Reliving and replaying the classics is what stopped me from buying a Wii. D:
I wonder how Yoshi's Island DS turned out myself! Since Yoshi's Story for the N64 was it's own thing, I guess the DS version is probably more like what you were expecting for the N64! ...Minus the 3D part. :B
Oh yeah! They still did a good job of making it look 3D. I don't think I completely understood it then, but I think they did a really good job on making 2D character look really 3D - kind of like the did in Donkey Kong Country. (: I think it's actually cool that they do that though. We got a 3D yoshi in Mario Party and Smash Brothers, but they didn't look as impressive as the 2D ones in Yoshi Story. :B Though, I didn't exactly like how Mario Kart 64 made the characters and a lot of the items 2D. In 3D levels it feels a little more empty, and it looked odd at some points. The characters also got pretty blurry because of the limits, so I'm glad Yoshi's Story pulled it off so well. (:
The score part ya mentioned I'm confused about. :3 At least I remember ya mentioned with enough high scores ya get cool levels in Yoshi's Island... and I at least remember a rumor about playing as different colored yoshies when you get all the melons or hidden coins in the game... but that could still be years of deceit. 8D
While each level still has the goal of getting to the end or beating a boss, it's neat that it didn't have objectives like Mario 64 or GoldenEye 007 had. You could just good off if ya wanted too - and since the levels were kind of limited and it wasn't a huge adventure you had to dedicate to (it was even a choose-your-own-path kind of adventure!) so you could really enjoy it and have fun in a single sitting, or however long ya needed or wanted. That kinda freedom just makes a game all the more loveable, I'd think. :3

Most definately. The choose-your-own adventure aspect in Yoshi's Story did make it tons of fun. Actually, it brings me to the next point.
Yoshi's Story, like-it-or-not, never had a meaning to its points system aside from personal gratification. I'm certain you heard the rumor of the "Purple Yoshi." However, between myself and a number of people, we disproved it. The only extra Yoshies you could get were the Black and White ones.
As for the melons, you are 110%, Gabby-Gabby-Gaboo right! If you were able to eat 30 melons in each level you went through, you DID get a different ending. I did it ONCE. The ending changes by switching some of the last few statements in the ending statement.
Oh, did you ever spell out the "Coin Phrase" in Yoshi's Story? If you Krmp'd melons on the track they wanted you to, you could make a "Coin Letter" appear after you ate the trippy heart fruit. If you did this in EVERY LEVEL of the game, you spelled out a special message. ;)
Hehe. It's funny you should say classic gaming kept you from buying a Wii. I wanted one simply for that reason! I have all of Nintendo's console systems and, frankly, not enough room for them. The advent of the Virtual Console has been my paradise. Rather than paying $50 for a game, I can pay $20 and get THREE! I have "Yoshi's Story" on it and, after my doctors appointment on Wednesday, I think I will play it again. Huzzah!
I know this is getting long, but I must applaud you for having appreciation for the amazing thngs that the older systems could do. I remember how in awe I was when I saw "Donkey Kong Country." Back-in-the-day, developers REALLY pushed the systems to their limits. You don't really see such dramatic efforts being done with today's games or systems. Though, I may be just missing them.

Hehe, I think it was if you get all the melons you get the purple yoshi, and if you get all the coins you get an orange yoshi... next thing you know, someone will tell me you can't play as Luigi in Super Mario 64! ;_; Ehehe, I think there was a rumor about playing as Peach in the original Smash Brothers too... I think the 90s were a great time for game rumors. 8D It's not like today where a lot of screenshots are spoilers, and easy to find, but back then all you had to do was write it and people would fall for it. (Though, I don't think I've seen as many edited game menu images as I have for Smash Brothers Brawl, so even today there's a lot of that deceit going around.) But uh, back on point, I think the black and white yoshies were neat extras. :3
Really? :D So it only changes the ending when you play through that one time you collect all the melons? (And maybe if you ever attempt it again.) That's pretty cool. :D Even if it's just word changing, I think that's a really neat thing to do for the people that worked hard at it. (:
And yeah! I don't exactly remember it, but a friend and I had the player's guide and were able to keep track. It was something like "You are yoshis greatest partner" or something, right? I forget the exact wording by now, but I think it's really sweet. :3 ...I wonder how they did that in Japanese since the signs there are so complex. :B
I see what ya mean. :D I remember at least one friend of mine (who mentioned a lot of people doing this) who sold his systems because he heard that you could play games from any previous system on the Wii. I don't know if they have every game available that way, but I still think it's a really cool idea. :3 That's kind of why I got a DS - I didn't have a GBA, so it also opened the doors for new games (old games, actually) that I didn't have the chance to play. :3 I can still fit my other systems here at home when I use them, but the Wii really makes it concenient. :D Best wishes with your next doctor's appointment too!
Hehe, I'm so happy they did such a great job on DKC. The graphics were pushed to the limit, the music tracks were beautiful, or just really exciting (a lot of great video game remixes came from that game's OST!), it was really challenging at times (REALLY FRUSTRATING), but still possible to play through, so it was worth it. :3 Earlier this year I actually replayed the game and was able to beat it in under 24 hours! :3 Really fun to relive that game... I'm not sure what games are best today either, but it probably doesn't help that I'm always buying older games myself. :D

I don't know whether its because I'm older, or cheap, but I just don't get into the newer games like I do the older ones. To me, particularly with systems like the Wii, 360, and PS3, it seems the overall focus is on graphics and, personally, they have always been a large back-burner to me. Not that my eye can't make them out as well, but because it seems designers get so caught up in them that they forget about "substance," "playability," and "replay value."
Gabby-Gabby-Gaboo! You remembered it! "You are Yoshi's Great Partner" was indeed the phrase. On my "Yoshi's Story" page, I worked with a number of site patrons to put that little ditty together. What a sweet, compliment to those who cared enough to figure it out.
Here's something else fun to note. Did you know that our US version varied from the Japanese version? In Japan, the egg blocks didn't turn the color of the Yoshi you were playing as. In addition, the built-in, save feature was not existant. So, in Japan, you had to play straight through.
Honestly, if you were playing the game for fun, you didn't really need the "Save." However, when trying for ALL MELONS it helped TONS. Levels could go on FOREVER as you tried to flush them all out. By-the-way, if you ever finished a level with all 30 melons, you also got a different symbol in the background of Yoshi instead of the smiley heart. :) Got to love the little, happy nuances. ;)
As much as I loved DKC, I liked DKC 2 better. That's next on my list for the Wii's Virtual Console. I actually BEAT the whole game and got all of the DK and Kremling Coins. The concept of their being a "Second" final boss battle was just too sweet! Furthermore, when you beat King K-Rool for the second time, you got to stack yourself up against Mario, Yoshi, and Link for who did the best in getting the coins! Yoshi does such a cute, little dance on his pedastal. Have you ever played it?
You have a DS? Sweet! If you can find it for cheap, I'd highly encourage you to get your hands on "Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island" if you can. I know you just got the original, but the "Advance" version is AMAZING!
However, on a side note, there are some things that get EDITITED between YI for the SNES and for the GBA. For example, Kamek's line when you battle the "Naval Pirahna" in world 3-8 and the name of Extra World 6. There are some other "edits," but those stuck out to me like a sore thumb.

I don't think you're alone in thinking that... but then again, I'm older and cheaper now than I was before too. 8D I love all the old, discount games in stores. :D I think a perfect example of what you mean is Bomberman: Act Zero. They game a loveable old game new, highly detailed, hardcore Halo-esque roborealistic graphics and seemed to expect gamers to just fall in love with it. (No save feature, no multiplayer, no real story... they ditched everything important and tried to sell a look.) Upping the graphics with each new system is important to me, but there has to be more to it than that for it to be worth all the money it costs. :B
I didn't know about the Japanese things! I think the colored eggs makes a special little difference, even if it isn't exactly necessary... it's still a nice thing to have. :3 And eeeeeeek! When games don't have any memory to them, I feel like I lose a big reason to keep playing... except maybe for Tetris. :3 I'm really thankful for that US version's change. :3 That's a big reason why I wasn't a big fan of Sonic games. 8D
But you're right, it wasn't exactly necessary in that game. (: It'd only really help if you couldn't finish a story in a single sitting, if you liked keeping track of scores, or if you wanted to play and replay a single level without the rest of the story. But I remember! Instead of the smiley heart they had the melon, right? I was surprised when I saw that, and it probably made me super happy too! :D
Eee! The whole reason why I was re-playing through DKC (not that you need a reason with that game) and why I was doing it so quickly was because I had just bought DKC2 on ebay, and wanted to play it through in order to get the full effect. (: The graphics were still kicking butt, there was more animal fun, the music was... beautifuller? Ahaha, and the added sense of romance stuck with me and made it an even more enjoyable playing experience. (Diddy and Dixie are still one of my favorite game couples.) But I was still kinda tortured by gameplay since the levels went on so long and were a lot tougher... I beat it, but that's probably part of why I didn't go the extra mile with that other buff kremling's gate to a new world... the few stages I played there were fun... but hearing about a second boss sounds like it's more worth it. :D
Hehe, actually I remember ya mentioned that game before, so I looked last time I went to Gamestop but they didn't have it. :B I dunno if I'd notice the same things, but I sure hope I will if I get the chance! :#

Oh, the difference you notice between the SNES and GBA versions of Yoshi's Island are just gold. Though, you can't go wrong with how Kamek makes a "navel" reference in the original version and they "edit" it out in the remake. Honestly, what's so wrong with making a navel reference? Would the sensitive folks preferred they used belly button? ;)
Edits aside, though, if you play the GBA version of "Yoshi's Island" you can actually get a BONUS ending. Yep, yep, yep! Sure can! It's uber cute, too. Should you get a chance to play it, you'll notice something "unique" appear in "Special 6" that justs tells a whole new story of its own.
Oh, as you do have DKC 2, I do encourage you to try and reach "Krocodile Core" in the Kremling's special world. The way you see King K-Rool there is priceless and the dancing Yoshi is more than worth it. He looks all SNES 3D!

Hehe, I remember some friends of mine used to pair up Navel and Kamek in a relationship for fun. 8D I don't know if it was edited because not all Mario creatures have navels or if it's just too sexy, but I guess that's how it went! :3
You're a lot better at getting special endings and 100% completing games than me! ;P I really do give it my best! but I guess I lack the skill. :3 Hopefully some day I get to experience some of these things. :B Maybe I'll invest in more player guides.
I remember seeing some of the 3D yoshi online, but the rest is something I'll have to work towards! :3
