In Connecticut I know for a fact that replicas are not uncommon.
Red sandstone markers are common down there, and don't age nearly as well as slate.
I assume this is real. Slate can age very well, particularly the high-quality type some Boston-area carvers used.
Beyond that, not sure.

i don't think i've seen any sandstone around here, but it's not like i've paid attention
marble is common enough and i doubt any would last 300 years and still be legible
i have some marble chunks left over from broken stones that were replaced
as far as i can tell they're only about 100-150 years old, but they're very eroded.
