For about 3 decades in the mid-1700s, the Soule family carved these faces, known as "Medusas" by people in the gravestone art field because of their wild hair.

EDIT (12/12/24): The stone was cleaned a couple of years ago. So here is a picture of it I took this pat summer, in its pristine state~
