
We got up BEFORE dawn one morning to take a trip out to the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx for an early morning lecture by Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass. The tour guide was hustling us along, but I did stop to take this and a few other pictures.
I enjoyed the lecture, but enjoyed seeing the Sphinx even more. What's quite interesting is that some of the blocks have the marks of the stonecarvers' chisels on them (I believe these are more modern, "repair" blocks... it's been repaired a number of times - since 1500 BC (or earlier.)
You can get some sense of just how huge it is by looking at the teensy people between its paws.
