“Doctor, why did you go with a quadruped model?” Allen asks the bear.
“Far more stable in battle conditions… that and a bipedal model would draw more questions,” responds the doctor.
It doesn’t take long for the little machines to do what they are programmed to do. The computer screen quickly read “biomass conversion 100%”. Gola tried to move but couldn’t. He tried to speak but couldn’t. Gola looked around, the world looked different through his new cyborg eyes. Gola then felt something connect to the back of his neck.
“Okay doctor, we are ready to reprogram him. We have a solid data link to his neural cortex. We can start erasing memories and uploading the OS on your word,” Allen spoke as Gola watched him start typing on the nearby computer.
‘Don’t do this’, Gola could only think. ‘ Please don’t do this!’ But a “proceed” from the bear dashed those hopes. Gola could feel memories slipping away. He could feel things he knew becoming hazy. Were memories actually slipping away? He couldn’t remember losing any. Gola tried to think back and all he could remember was being brought online. So no none of his memories were gone. Gola started to think, his purpose was to follow orders and destroy enemies of his country.
“Reprogramming complete,” Allen said. “Reading weapon payload now.”
Reprogramming? Gola thought. No, they didn’t reprogram him. This is how he has always had been. Gola could feel his operating system coming online and activate his voice module.
“Prototype Unit 001 online and awaiting commands,” Gola’s voice synthesiser spoke.
“Excellent” the bear said. “Lets load him up with the phase cannon and the HF blade for the demo.”
“Right,” Allen responded, working the computer as the robotic arms connected the weapons to Gola’s body.
Gola established a neural link to each weapon, running the diagnostics before speaking again, “Phase cannon online, neural link at 100%, HF blade online, neural link at 100%. Prototype Unit 001 ready for orders.”
“Prototype Unit, what is your name designation,” the bear asks Gola.
Gola thinks for a moment; his name is Gola. “Prototype Unit 001 designation Gola.”
“Doctor, why did we let him keep his name?” Allen asked, finishing his diagnostic scan.
“Simple Allen, soldiers fighting along side the weapons platforms will want something to call then. As each unit develops its personality it will make the units more accepted with the troops,” the bear spoke with a smile. “Well, Allen lets go show the military what we have for them. Come on Gola lets go!”

The bear looks at you and smiles, "You are very correct Mr. Downloader, this could perhaps be the thread that unravels the whole project one day. Though that day is not today. You see for a long time, speculation such as this will be limited to conspiracy theories that, frankly speaking, most of the population won't even begin to believe." The bear nods at Allan who moves towards the door. "getting information on top secret military hardware is... difficult at best. I would even question how you found out about this project. But I digress, in the beginning I am sure it will be easy to play it off as coincidence." The bear turns towards Allan and does his best 'innocent' voice, "'oh my yes we named the unit Gola, after a dear friend of ours who went missing'. Or 'well you see John is a really common name'. This will work until someone gets a little too curious and looks under the hood. But by then these units will be the backbone of our military. No military official will want to admit to what has happened, especially if we are winning the war. I suppose this is the only downside of using a living brain. There is just some parts we can override and there are some we cannot. It resists responding to anything other then what it was use to being called. Perhaps by then the war will be over and they won't have been of machines like this, though... I highly doubt it. Now, if you could please step this way, I would love to have a more detailed chat on how you found out about us." The bear moves towards you, injection in hand....
It still feels like lazy programming, after all, it's not a living brain anymore, it's a mass of micro-tronics. Could just erase the name, and give them a new one. But hey, it's your work, and I won't get into an argument about it. And since it was a commission, arguing too much about it would be an even greater act of futility, so I'll accept your answer.
The art is a commission but the story is my own work so I am more then happy to discuss it. I am glad you feel so strongly about the story to contribute your thoughts, I would rather have one conversation about something then a hundred 'good jobs'.
As I like keeping this stuff as story focused as I can I will continue that:
-START LOG- Voice Log: Project Zentra Report, Allen Garder Core Systems Assistant, March 14th
With the cost of fully integrated AI pushing the project cost well out of the target scope, Dr. Walard has decided that using an organic brain is out next best option. This allows us to simulate much of the same dynamic learning and adaptability an AI would provide with only a fraction of the cost. The challenge thus far is dealing with resistance from the subject and ensuring total compliance. I have modified one of the standard XT-329 neutral implants in an attempt to solve this problem. The alpha test went well, we were able to suppress a large amount of the subjects memory by hijacking neutral transmitters into that section of the brain. By redirecting some of those neural pathways we were able to provide the subject with access to data we controlled including false memories. Though we did notice an anomaly during testing, when showed a picture of a loved one or asked its name the neural dampener was less the effective. While the subject didn't understand its attachment to these things, it still shows a flaw in my design. -END LOG-
-START LOG- Voice Log: Project Zentra Report, Allen Garder Core Systems Assistant, July 9th
After much testing I think I have determined the root cause of the memory issue we encountered in the first alpha test. Emotional memory is closely tied to much of the core memory of the unit. I have adapted the dampener to reroute much of the units core memory in order to bypass this flaw. This dramatically increases the number of synaptic functions I need to override and provide resolution for. I think I have identified all the targeted pathways I need though. -END LOG-
-START LOG- Voice Log: Project Zentra Report, Allen Garder Core Systems Assistant, July 16th
Alpha subject brain death occurred at 16:42. Overriding core memory is proving to be more of a challenge then first thought. There is additional function I had not accounted for in my design plans. Dr. Walard has informed me that he wishes to go ahead with beta phase testing calling the emotional vulnerability as "an acceptable risk". This does mean that we won't be able to use enemy combatants as prototypes as this vulnerability could result on them siding with their own country. This leaves us with plan b, using our own citizens. I don't know if I can ethically abide by this. Dr. Walard assures me it is no different then issuing a draft, in fact these units could save countless of our troops. Time will be the judge I guess. -END LOG-

The problem with 'looking under the hood' is that unless your cyberized the brain like you did the rest of his body, . .. you are sending him into a COMBAT situation! All it will take is one good tank shell or mine to blast its head halfway open, and show there's a living brain in there instead of a neural-net.
Excerpt from the logs of Dr. Dennis Walard:
In theory, the process for creation of weapon platforms of smaller or larger size are dependent upon the materials available to the nanites at the time of injection. For scaling up the platform, the nanites will require additional materials outside of the subjects body made accessible and marked for use during assembly. Smaller units are also possible though the size of the cranial unit cannot be altered without cognitive impairment. Excess materials would be excreted through the surface of the unit as a bio-sludge which can be safely washed off the unit after conversion. Currently design specifications for a larger multiprocessing units are in the works though no firm date can be set at this time.

Excerpt from the logs of Dr. Dennis Walard:
One of my researchers today suggested using orphans and street children as subjects for smaller units. He will do well here I think. I have put forward the request myself to the administration. I just hope those half-wits will not be short sighted and sentimental about the idea of using 'children'. This is a war we are trying to win! The neural dampener will likely need to be adjusted and adapted for their variable brain chemistry. They would likely need constant monitoring to ensure that the dampener doesn't get out of sync, though I am sure these units would have a very short lifespan if that is the case. Allan will figure something out again, assuming he doesn't have another crisis of conscience. If this keeps up I will put his name on the test subject list myself...

Interesting concept. Though hopefully this military has build in some fail-safe meassurements, just on case all things go bad and the 'Test-Subject' will be able to bypass all the memory blockades. Various Sci-Fi movies have shown that is always a baaaaad thing.
I may suggest something for this doctor. There are several fandoms online where people fantasize about either being turned into another species or even a robot/cyborg. I may suggest to contact those people secretely and offer them to be turned into such a cyborg willingly, in return they may serve for the military for either a certain time or until the war ends. This would save you both cost and time, as well the risk of their blocked memories arising later, causing a likely rebellion of your cyborg troops.
You may even suggest to keep a sample of their pre-conversion DNA to clone a new organic body for their brain to be reimplanted, if they would want to. I guess this would increase the willingness of the more unsure volunteers, knowing that they could return to a more 'normal' life later on.
In General, a willing subject would both prevent the risk of this department being persecuted after the war for breaking the 'No-Cyborg-Law' , as well as the above-stated risk of a cyborg rebellion.

The problem isn't just the subject/recipient is willing or not, but also the social uncanniness however the changed person try to participate into military ranks. It may be easier for being a soldier as another species, but very difficult when he/she is outside the realm of military, or how outsiders describe them through mass medias.
