I did suggest this as one of the options, since the armour was based on a game sprite, although even that one would still have left the neck exposed... But the idea here was to have a slightly revealing armour, that's not completely useless. So it's best not to think too hard of protective value :)

Besides, fantasy illustration for me is about having fun, depending on the subject matter, of course, but usually anyway. Practical is not always the most fun to look at ^^

The counterbalance for fantasy armors is they can be implied to have enchantments that make up for what they visually lack.

This is true. Usually those enchantments require the piece to be really ornate or revealing, for some reason.

Possibly because if you can't tell they're supposed to be enchanted, how can you interact with the enchantments?

(More likely it's because it's an economy where labor is cheap and materials are expensive, so the effort to make it look good doesn't hurt the cost.)
