WHY DID YOU JOIN FUR AFFINITY?
I joined Fur Affinity with the hopes of better understanding who and why I was after having my disability used against me by my former employer that tore my self-confidence to shreds.
The initial goal was to meet up with
mjbear,
tacki, and
iedino in the hope of understanding how they had come to cope with their particular interests while also see whether-or-not I was the terrible person my previous employer explicitly told me I was.
HOW DID YOU DISCOVER FUR AFFINITY?
I discovered Fur Affinity through looking up the works of Tacki, MJ Bear, Showtime Yoshi, Astolpho, and Friskywoods on Deviant Art. One of their pages referenced Tavi Munk whose DA page had a link to Fur Affinity. I followed the link and would often reference the site when I needed a “Pick-Me-Up” as I coped with losing my reading vision while experiencing numerous ocular trials and workplace bullying situations between 2006 and 2008.
WERE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW YOU WERE RECEIVED ON FA?
The first months I was on FA were wonderful! I met everyone I wanted to while also befriending
fatherfalcon,
tealeon, and
wingedhamham. All made me feel welcome in the community while encouraging me to express myself.
WHAT’S BEHIND YOSH E. O’DUCKY?
[i]Yosh’s design was inspired by Winged Ham-Ham. She took some simple notes I thought of and developed what would become a continually evolving character design.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR PLACE IN THE FURRY COMMUNITY?
I honestly was rather disappointed in how my works were perceived by the community. It wasn’t until
nishi taught me to be proud of what I do whether-or-not it is well received that I began on a much needed path of self-worth and self-validation where I know nobody can take away those accomplishments I achieve through the arts and beyond.
DO YOU EVER REGRET JOINING FA?
No. Not for a moment. Joining FA has empowered me to unleash my full potential despite my ocular limitations that will soon become total blindness. It has also taught me how to “Objectively” share my feelings. It is truly amazing how the arts empower us to share feelings without coming off as ranting or depressing.
WHAT’S WITH THE DIAPERS?
I joined FA to answer that exact question. Friends I made helped me to begin a journey of self-discovery of why I had an affinity for them with
azuredragon playing the largest part in my acceptance of this aspect of myself.
With friendship and therapy, I came to discover the attraction to diapered, cartoon animals stems from a broken childhood filled with discrimination, misunderstanding, and endless eye appointments. This put my mind in a place where “It is trying to get back what it feels it lost”. This has lead me on an ongoing journey to turn my affinity for diapers into something positive. Therapy has shown me liking diapers is as much a part of me as blindness. Learning to live in harmony with these aspects of myself will be a lifelong struggle in which I’m determined to use to make myself a better person.
HOW IS A DIAPER FETISH POSITIVE?
When you look at it is a “Feeling” or “Element of Yourself” instead of as a sexual desire. You dig deeper into what it is about the diaper that makes you feel happy without arousal.
For me, I’ve found I really like being a “Helper” / “Caretaker”. Knowing I can provide unconditional care to others in which makes them feel safe and secure. When you feel safe and secure, you can work on building self-confidence, self-validation, and self-advocacy.
Kind of like a mother bird with her young, I like to know I can welcome others into my nest, protect them from what they may feel has no defense, build their confidence, and allow them to fly away better-than-ever.
HAVE YOU DISCOVERED ANYTHING INTERESTING ABOUT FURRIES THAT YOU NEVER EXPECTED?
Yes. This being that most furries, including myself, are individuals who are only seeking acceptance, understanding, and validation in which they often do not find in their real lives. It is this discovery, along with others, why I founded Coping with Limitations as our diversity of reasons for having our particular fetishes, interests, etc. may be different, but we are all united through a desire to make friends, find others we can relate with, not feel alone, and know we can cope with whatever the real world may throw at us for our differences.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT JOINING A FURRY SITE?
Anyone thinking of joining the furry community should first realize that the stereotypes of being sex fiends who like to dress up like animals is more the exception than the rule. Most furries are down to earth, creative, and thoughtful people who are looking for acceptance and understanding in a world they feel there is none.
Behind the fetishes, art, and icons are real people who are trying to understand why they are the way they are while hoping someone will aid them in validating their feelings. The role plays, character designs, etc. help people feel defended against the traumas human society may have caused them. The “Fursona” is a safe place that allows people who fear judgment feel out others until they are ready to open up more. It is when we are able to put our characters aside and speak as humans on equal grounds that we can begin self-empowering ourselves in real life.
If anyone has any additional questions you’d like to ask. Please feel free to do so in the comments below.

Interestingly enough, I've never given a lot of thought to particular clothing that Yosh would wear beyond what you usually see him in. All the other clothing schemes have been thought up by creative folks like you, Nishi, LeonXIII, Fussy Puppy, etc. I honestly delight in seeing what all of you think would make Yosh look like the one you all see in your heads. :)
There's only one real other look that is Yosh specific that I've come to like. It was created by Boom and is Yosh's pajamas. It is seen in the left-hand bottom corner of the following image.

Yosh doesn't mind going around with his diaper exposed. He's done so on many occasions. The only time he "tries" to not show it is when he is supposed to be of age where he shouldn't be wearing diapers. However, the bulge is kind of a dead giveaway. :)
Never have seen Yosh in suspenders, or overalls. There are lots of clothing options that have yet to be explored with Yosh that only the mind can imagine what would happen if Yosh was in them. I know overalls would be a problem, though, since they can be tricky to take off when you need to go potty and are just getting the gist of being able to hold it.
Boom did a great job with Yosh's pajamas. It is all her own original idea. It's super adorable, though, and is now a staple part of what I think of when Yosh goes to bed as a tyke. :)

I'm really happy with how you continue to improve upon your talents, Lanny. Your ability to continually adapt your art and writing based on what you learn is wonderful. You are most definitely far from being a one trick pony with your creativity.
I always do my best to keep up with all you draw. Some things I can see and some things I cannot. However, no matter what, I'm glad you keep at it. You do well in showing the joy of creativity is far greater than any number of views, comments, or faves. :)

It takes a lot of humility to know achievement is largely defined by ourselves than by others. I can tell you I've had many works I've put hours and/or years into in which barely got any views let alone comments, or faves. However, I can always look back and say, "I did it." and know the accomplishment is all mine.
Some of your series may have gone to the wayside, but what you learned through writing them will forever make you a better author. Keep up the great work, Lanny. :)

In particular, you. *Snugs* Seriously, I know I overkill this, but I don't know what I'd have done, or do now, without you, Nishi. You've literally reshaped me as a person in so many positive ways. :)
XxfussypuppyxX was so clever in giving Yosh a bow tie and that notepad. The cargo / carpenter shorts give him more pockets to store fun things in, too. So, for the sake of fun, I thought I'd have it serve as a "Junior Reporter" image. I'm also hopeful that anyone who reads it will realize how it takes time, effort, and the right environment to discover your own self-worth and validation. :)

It's really amazing how you are able to articulate your experiences and learning in being part of the furry community in such a professional and informative manner. You really are able to portray us furries in such a positive manner, to such an extent that I would nominate you as our furry/babyfur spokes-hatchy if there was ever a situation that required such a role! *hugs*
Considering that you successfully created your awesome Coping with Disabilities Through Pony Panel, I would say you were highly qualified for that position.

Thank you so kindly, Tacki. Your comment here is high praise as you were pivotal in creating the experience I've had over the past seven years. You showed me kindness and friendship from day one while serving as an inspiration through your creative works. Throw on top of all that your determination to succeed in your real life goals and I'd say I couldn't ask for a better role model. *Huggles*
You may not have the time as you once did for this site, but your spirit is always here with me each and every day. Please know I'm rooting for you as continually better yourself both professionally and creatively. You will always be my friend. Always. :)

This explains so much. Most I'll get to talking about in the next letter.
But for the simple parts I totally get why I'm still a furry. I'm somewhat trapped into it but embraced by it. More in notes though.
Glad to realize this has helped you so much. It's also weird to think about how long you've been here. Like things only seem old to me if they were in an early part of my lifetime. A film from 2002 feels like a weird thing, a film from 1922 does not.

That's very interesting. Perhaps it is due to films being from times prior to the start of your life being of a "Timeless" feel since knowing and learning of them shows how it didn't matter when it was made since it is a part of what is and will be?
On the other hand you can see those films, shows, etc. from your own lifetime as being a part of specific milestones and/or moments in your life? You can associate them with being a certain age, liking, or not liking, certain things, etc.?
I'm hoping to catch up on some of my Notes today. It will be nice to continue our discussion while learning even more of what you have to share regarding the history of film and creativity. :)

My wife is very implicit. Though, to be honest, I tried to keep things relevant to what it has been like here on FA and my wife isn't an FA'er nor one who really enjoys this sort of community. She is happy that I am happy within it, but that's about the extent.
Those who know of my wife, like you, would definitely understand all the intricate ways in which she has positively aided me in evolving into a better person while aspiring for all I can despite my struggles. It would also take me far too long to explain how her part positively impacted my life since the Furry Community is one half of what has made me who I am where my wife is the other half. :)

I made them up. Each based on relevant thoughts, concerns, and other matters I have felt and seen others feel with regard to joining a site such as this one. The overall hope was to allow those who may stumble upon the questions to get some insight on how this place, and those like it, are great places to find out who you are while building friendships and self-esteem.
Nope! My wife does NOT like this sort of thing at all. Nobody likes to like everything someone else, though. So it is okay.

This is true. I've also learned so much from my father that I do plan to support him if he were to join a place like Fur Affinity. It's a community of thinkers who seek a place to discover themselves while pursuing their talents. Fetishes, Sex, etc. are indeed a part of it, but there are far more deeper reasons each person comes to this place that make it truly fascinating.
I'm hopeful you get a chance to better understand yourself as you meet new friends. The art of others is always so influential in how it can make you feel like you are not alone in feeling the way you do.

I think that is why people consider 16 the unofficial entry age for deviantart and fur affinity. Viewer description is advised anyway for such sites, and there 18 plus limit for some art. Being an FA veteran, you could guide him to survive and thrive in this section of the site.
Thank you for crediting me!
I'm sure you've been asked this many this many times before. But what sparked your love of writing? Was it something that you liked to do when you were a child, or later on?
Or is there any hobbies that you enjoy, that we might not have known? This could be for both of you, and your character if you like. :)

It was an honor to give you credit for such a wonderful work that inspired so many thoughts. There's all sorts of ideas I'd like to work with based on what you illustrated here. :)
I've been writing for as long as I can remember. The first inspiration I can directly recall was "The Transformers" and "The Care Bears". However, once I started into video games, my stories were based on a childhood dream to become a game developer so I could bring my works to life.
Most of what I wrote was video game, or silly, related up until I started college. It was at this point I finally started taking my writing more serious by developing original characters, scenes, adventures, etc.
As for other hobbies I enjoy, I'd say I'm all about conversations, role playing, and I do like a good walk. Video games were a HUGE part of my life until, a month ago, my vision reached a point I can really no longer play them. So I'm working on finding new ways to find fun despite this loss along with other losses of abilities to partake in interests like flying on an airplane, riding carnival rides at theme parks, going swimming, etc.

That's awesome that you haven't strayed from your interest in writing. I used to have an HUGE fascination with insects. Now that i'm older, I have lot the spark I used to have as a child. I used to do a lot of comics, which is a form of story telling. Maybe I could do some shorts, or a full comic series one day. Do you still have some of your oldest stories? I wish I saved some of my oldest comics, or knew where they are.
At your panel Coping With Disabilities Through Pony, there was the girl that was working on a system that let the blind play Pokemon. In time, there could possibility be a setting that allows the blind to also play. I've seen setting options for the colored blind, why not a setting for the blind? Which the setting will use the sense of sound to alert the player of on coming obstacles or enemies.

Rachel Merryfield, developer of "Braillemon", has put a lot of effort into making a version of Pokemon that is accessible to the blind and visually impaired. Her programming isn't official by Nintendo, but you can check it out by visiting the following link.

Interests do change over time. Some stay while others fade. For me, I was really into fish and baseball. However, I eventually transitioned out and started building on what you see me doing today. For a time, though, I would not go to school if I wasn't wearing a shirt with a fish on it. :)
Sadly a lot of my earlier works were destroyed in a flood a few years back. The only thing I have left is a poetry collection I wrote back in my Junior year of High School. I did once have a comic series I did in Jr. High and a collection of notebooks filled with video game concepts, designs, and what I hoped would one day be more than doodles.

I really hope that when the game's done, that people see the potential it has, and can invest on making games more assailable for the visibly impaired. Or hopefully inspire other game developers to try to implement the same, or similar features that may allow the blind to play. What Rachel is doing is really awesome, and her work deserves more recognition.
How you would only wear a shirt with a fish on it reminds me of how when I was little, I'd only drink root beer if the can had the dog on it. Children can be so picky over the littlest of things.
What sucks about having an idea is trying to make it become tangible. Like, maybe someone has a million, or billion dollar idea for a movie. But they don't have the money to produce this movie them self, and they don't have access to pitch the idea to someone who can produce it.

That's an issue that impacts everyone on this site who aspires to, one day, see their work go beyond being a series of posts.
Personally, I have had lots of ideas and even have tried to pitch my ideas to Literary Agents. Sadly, I was rejected. It was a lot of work learning how to write Query Letters and dig up addresses for people to help promote the ideas I hoped to get off the ground. Fortunately, despite the rejection, I realized the joy is in sharing your work while realizing how extremely "Subjective" the arts are.
I always put pitching an idea in the following series.
"You have to the write work at the right time being reviewed by the right person who is in the right mood who just so happens to like the idea you have who has the same fervor as you to see the idea go the next step."
There are so many factors of getting your idea to be accepted beyond your audience of friends here that are out of your control. Lots of other people and situations have to come into play just right to go that one level up. You can help it along by trying to apply endlessly to Literary Agent, Publishing Houses, Film Studios, etc. However, it all comes down to what makes you feel the happiest. If you believe success is the key to your happiness then don't stop going after those who can elevate your ideas. If you are seeking to simply enjoy the arts without worry of getting stressed out just keep posting and have fun. You never know. That right person at the right time and in the right mood may just come upon your work and help get things going further just by stumbling on your little space in the world. You never know. :)

The way I got into diapers is interesting. However, it's really just my subconscious trying to find a way to feel safe, secure, and happy despite going totally blind while coping with the many traumas I've gone through in my efforts to be seen as a human being instead of for my disability.
Diapers, to me, put my mind in a place where I can better focus on relaxing. Kind of like taking a deep breath that really does dial down the stress and anxiety. You are aware of that comfort around your waist while being able to imagine someone holding you close, patting you on the bum, and saying, "It's okay" while genuinely believing it. It's such a nice feeling in which I do wish I could enjoy more often.
I'm hopeful that you have found happiness and understanding with your interest in diapers, my friend. Once you do there is no more taboo. :)
