Another illustration I did inspired by the book Hunter's Moon (by Garry Kilworth). When a fox dies, a white fox ghost with a white flame above his head appears, showing others the way and leading them to the dead one.
This book touched me a lot. This drawing is no illustration of a special book scene, but just inspired by the whole story.
Picture was already drawin in summer this year, and sold at EF14.
Done with Aquarell colors (water colors).
Poem "Sacred Duty" - by
Skyfox
Based on the drawing
The night, silent, dark, and calm
Lit only by the moon and stars
Shrouds the forest in a veil
Under a flame of white, fulfilling his sacred duty
A white fox appears, shining brighter than moonlight
To guide us to our fallen brother,
Our Kin, our friend
To the place where eternal peace was found
Where he laid down to forever sleep
Dread fills our minds
Sadness fills our hearts
Wondering who we will find
Following the spirit guide
We stop when he enters our sight
Once filled with the fire of life
Now cold and empty, he has been set free
We lower our heads in respect and love
May he know what he meant to us
Wind rushes through the trees
To carry away his soul
Silently, except to shush our mourning
And dry our flowing tears

...with the difference that the Black Rabbit of Inlé calls the names of living rabbits who are going to be dead after his visit; he brings their souls to the kingdom of Lord Frith.
It's been ages since I last read Watership Down... but I still remember that clearly. Spooky, heh =^.^=

Tani, this picture is sad, beautiful, and wonderful, all in one. When I first saw it I had company in the room and couldn't fully appreciate it at the moment. When I came back later to view it again, read the description, and understand the depth of the meaning, it brought tears to my eyes. As somebody who is so closely connected with foxes, this picture has a lot of meaning for me. Thank you.
It reminded me of one day at work a couple summers ago. When doing my rounds I found a fox laying dead in the flowing water of a stream that broke up over a path when the drainage pipe was plugged. I don't know how or why he (or she) died, but it was very sad for me none the less. All I could do was give the fox a proper burial with best wishes for the journey over and beyond the bridge.

Oh wow...this is quite a stunning picture and even more so once i read the background on it from you. I was left speechless for a moment. This is truly a moving piece and i absolutely love the abundance of emotion in it. the color contrast and expressions are equally as powerful. really- really great job on this Tani.
I'm gonna have to search out this book. is it a german novel?

Hi!
After seeing this picture a couple of moths ago I went searching for " Hunters Moon " This week i had the good fortune of finding this book in my local RSPCA Charity shop. I have read four chapters now and would like to thank you Tani for introducing this book to me. I used to do a lot of reading but lately i have not been able to find a book that takes my interest but this book I have not been able to put it down. I have not been interested in a book since I read the two books of " William Horwood The Wolves of Time )
This Scene remides me of this passage from the book:
"The hunt - he evaded the hunt. He was a clever fox, my A-ho; said O-ha, to the fox-spirit.
Vacant eyes were turned on the vixen.
'Yes, he evaded the hunt. I think you are aware of what happened. He was seen by some stableboys. returning to earth, and they dug him up, killed him with spades. They brought him here, threw him to the hounds."
'And his tail?
'They have a word for it . A bursh. It's their word not ours.'
O-ha stared at her mate, at the ragged fur that used to lie beside her own, full of warmth, full of vitality. Now it was an empty thing, full of holes, covered in black, dried blood. Glazed empty orbs, more vacant than those of the fox-spirit, were in the place of those hot, bright eyes she was used to seeing, looking into her own."
thank you TaniDaReal
