In 1705 John Stevens, at 51, decided to take up a 2nd career as a gravestone carver. The fact that he'd had no experience in the field did not faze him.
He, his son John II, and grandson John III, have stones all over Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut and eastern Massachusetts. Their shop, under different ownership, remains in business in Providence to this very day.
