Working a bit on landscapes with a Halo theme.
I am always curious as to what a 'first contact' scenario would be like, how would two different groups react to one another and what would be the best way to first introduce yourself to a completely alien group (whether they are truly aliens or not) part of me wonders if letting the foreign group obtain artwork of various kinds would be the best way before physically meeting them, but I digress...
8"x10" acrylic on canvas to get a start on the new year. Any critiques are welcome. If it sucks, then let me know why!

First contact scenarios are likely to be a pain in the ass, simply due to different greeting customs. The best possible scenario would be if we met a peaceful race which was willing to set aside their own preconceptions and not take offense at anything we might do. If we happened to meet a race like our own, or a more warlike one, bad things would be more likely.
Did you know about the Human/Mimbari first contact in the Babylon 5 universe? Their idea of respect was to open their gun ports... and we happened to misunderstand. ;)
The first contact scenario in the book The Sparrow (by Mary Doria Russell) was relatively interesting, too. Some Jesuit missionaries end up on a low-tech planet that's inhabited by two different intelligent species - one of which is a ruling / predator class and the other a servant / food class. They happen to meet the servant class first, and things start out well, with both groups sending forward intelligent members of their species to try to learn how to translate their languages. The humans live with this simple villagers, and make excellent progress on learning the language and finding out more about their society... until some members of the predator class find out about the humans. Things go downhill from there...

I missed out on Babylon 5, but I have heard about the book The Sparrow. I would like to read it, unless it's bad, but I assume you bringing it up means it's worth a read.
One scenario I've played out in my mind (while I should be working) is the exchange of art before a physical meeting, perhaps as simple as leaving a sketchbook or drawing for the other race to find, but that would mean sneaking about and if one were caught by a not so fun filled race...yeah. Oh the possibilities the universe holds! Thanks for the comment :)

Indeed, The Sparrow was an excellent book, though it certainly wasn't a happy one.
And something I forgot to mention that's really relevant to what you're saying: The entire reason why the Jesuits decide to go to this planet in the first place is because something like SETI (I forget which agency it is in the book) picks up a transmission from the alien system... which they determine to be part of a music broadcast. :)
In a sense, the same thing could happen with us and another species - any television or radio signals we send out might be discovered by species listening lightyears away.

That worries me a bit, if a race sees TV before meeting us, though society and tv have their similarities. That reminds me of the movie Contact (loved that movie). It seems likely that tv and radio signals would be found before we make any contact due to their head start. Tv certainly offers a wide view of society, so perhaps it is not a bad thing, though the truth can sometimes lead to undesired consequences.
