now with commissions all out of the way, I can finally start posting this story and image series I've been working on!
"Saurian" is the title, and also the name of the world in which it takes place.
The main characters Nomminus and Khaz are an unlikely duo, she's an adventurer, always on the move and prefers a solitary life. He is a bright-eyed and excitable kid who ends up tagging along with her on her adventures due to unfortunate circumstances.
They will learn to work together as they deal with whatever dangers or challenges they might face while wandering the world.
The day was new, Nomminus decided to keep to her bed a few more hours, she'd paid good money for it after all, it'd been quite some time since a comfortable bed was her's to sleep on. As she eventually awoke enough to prop herself up, she gave a large yawn and rubbed her still tired eyes. She pulled the blankets off her blue scaled body, and moved herself so her legs hung off the bed. Bringing herself to stand, she stretched out, letting loose another yawn before shaking herself awake, and proceeding to put on her clothes. It was certainly nice to spend a night not encased in armour. Putting on simple cotton coverings, she took to the main area of the tavern, enjoying in another hot meal before she would suit up once more and head out. As she ate, rumours of a murder in the village last night reached her ears. She didn't pay too much mind to it, she's seen death many times on her travels, it was nothing alarming to her. Should someone become severely concerned while in the tavern, she'd make her best to try and console them, otherwise she'd keep to herself.
Once her meal done with, she proceeded back to her room, throwing on her armour once again, and heading out of the tavern with warm goodbyes, and a free snack for the road that she wasn't expecting. One of the maidens had baked buns for her, in hopes she wouldn't starve while off on her adventures.
Leaving the tavern, she made her way back to the smithy she'd noticed the night before. A serpent at the forge would see her approach. "Nommy! I thought I'd seen the last of you. Good to know my armour's kept you alive. What's it been, two years? I was beginning to think maybe you had a bad tussle with a group of bandits."
"Lavindra, old friend. I didn't expect you to be here, it's wonderful to see you." Nomminus grinned, it'd been two years since she last saw this pink titanboa. In a small village to the south, under her father's care and guidance, she was learning to be a skilled smithy. Nomminus had come to the village after a quite rewarding exploration. With enough coin to commission a proper set of armour for herself, instead of scavenging from the less fortunate bodies found occasionally while on her adventures.
She stayed in and around the village until the commission was done. She considered it a warm home that she intended to return to should she reach a fine age to retire.
The two would hug briefly. "You seem busy today." Nomminus stated, as she noticed a pile of daggers ready to be sharpened.
"Yup, didn't you hear? There was a murder last night, first one in a while that this town has had. A couple killed in front of their child, everyone is commissioning daggers to keep by their bedsides so they can feel safe now." Lavindra said. "I've taken the child in, he floats around my forge daily, so it seemed a better place to go than an orphanage, or worse yet to the streets. He should be around here somewhere, pretty strong lad considering what happened, still manages to pull a smile despite the pain."
Nomminus frowned slightly. "strong indeed, at least he'll be good help to you."
Lavindra nodded. "so far, he's been collecting wood for fires all morning. But, enough of that, I can see how dull your sword is, I'll sharpen it quick for you." she said, while in the process of yanking the gold-coloured sword from it's owner's belt with her tail. She slithers over to her grinding wheel to sharpen the blade.
The little tyrannosaur boy from the night before came marching over to the forge, arms full of old dead logs and branches for fires.
her heart would sink, Nomminus took a deep breath as she saw him. Not expecting to feel the sorrow that she did for the boy.
The child looked over, smiling and waving, his grin not as wide as before, but still genuine. He then went back to his work as Lavindra returned with the sharpened sword.
"There you are! Good as new and twice as sharp." She smiled, putting the sword back where it belonged. "Anything else my dear friend?"
Nomminus removed her gaze from the boy as the sword was given back to her. "A bow, and a quiver with a few arrows? I lost mine to a narrow escape from a sudden mudslide."
The snake laughed and went to fetch one of the already made bows and a quiver. "I only have 4 arrows left, is that okay?" she asked.
"Just fine, thank you." Nomminus replied.
Lavindra came back with the requested items. "how about 150? Friends and Family discount." she smiled.
Nomminus nodded and pulled out a bag of coins. "Keep the change." she says with a slight laugh, as she took bow and quiver.
behind one of the nearby buildings, the tyrannosaur child pokes his head out, to watch this brave blue adventurer set off once again.
Lavindra caught him watching out of the corner of her eye. "Maybe you should take him, he's fond of you. He might have more fun adventuring than working at a bench all day."
Nomminus paused. "It may be too dangerous for someone so young..."
"It'll be fine, he'll have you, and you weren't much older when you started from what I remember about your stories." Lavindra grabbed a wooden sword, a knapsack of sorts, placing a dagger and a few other things inside.
"Come here, boy." she called to the child.
He ducked back behind the building at first, not expecting to get caught looking. He then came over hurriedly "Yes ma'am?"
He was given the bag and the sword. "You'll be going with Nomminus here, you'll be accompanying her on her next adventure."
"Wow! Really?" He said excitedly. "I'll be good I promise!"
Nomminus tried to speak up against it, but all that came out instead was "Aaaah...I...alright?" She gave a look to Lavindra, why was she doing this?
"You'll train hard every day, and make sure you listen to everything she tells you to do, okay?" Lavindra said to the boy while getting him ready. Returning the look Nomminus gave her with one of confidence that this would turn out beneficial to both of them.
"Okay!" Said the boy excitedly, and before long, the two were headed to the city gates to leave. The boy marching excitedly beside Nomminus, ready to go out on adventure.
TL;DR: Nomminus wakes up, goes to the forge and meets a familiar face, she learns the child from last night is now orphaned and living with said friend. With a change of ideas of what's to be done with the boy, Lavindra the smithy sends him off with Nomminus to go have some adventures. Knowing it will be better for the both of them despite the dangers.
