I think R.A's have the ability to say "Yeah, this is beyond my pay-grade" and advise the people going to them for help to seek help from a more qualified source. Plus, there's the simple fact that I think they'll probably be obligated to report criminal acts like drug taking on college property. I spoke to my RAs a fair bit when I was in college halls though, and they did often seem a lot more together despite just being a few years older than myself. :)
Interesting that he'll admit to the bed-wetting episode rather than say 'I had a nightmare about crashing.'
And at every school I've ever seen, the RA's were juniors or sometimes junior faculty, particularly at secondary-level boarding schools. Someone close enough in age to understand the problems but with enough experience to deal with at least the minor ones and recognize the biggies that needed to be sent up the line.
