By popular demand, it's my Furry Artist Vending Machine comic! XD Originally posted on DA and VCL, I figured I'd place it here too.

Considering I've gotten all of one requests for a story,a trade I'm still waiting on,and no offers of money for them,I'd have to say you should consider yourself lucky your artistic proficiency is in an art form that's currently appreciated by the general public. Not all of us are so lucky.
Now where's the guy that puts his money in and then demands that this vending machine put out a piece of art available on ANOTHER vending machine, just with this guy's character.
"Dude! I'm paying you, can't you copy his style? And ummm pose? And ummm, medium, and... well everything but my ears are green, see?"
-_-;;

^This... I don't think some people fully understand the depths of what they are aasking for sometimes. It's like, okay, you commissioned me, and not them so you telling me for the 15th time that it need to look more like that guy/girls style, is just starting to piss me off!
Why sure! My drama-senses were tingling, so I was sure to save a copy :p
I'll host it for a while.

Notice how the ARTIST in the comic is labelled "Mr. Greed".

Panel #9 Wolfe Masters walks up:
"Oh, this is a good artist" *Examines price*
Panel #10 Wolfe Masters is out of panel, vending maching looks curious.
Panel #11 Wolfe Masters drags giant jar in:
I hope this accepts pennies.
Panel #12 Vending machine leaks oil everywhere. Wolfe Masters starts inserting coins.

when i was a newbie i would beg for art request from people like carmel kitteh and i probley tired out fluffy kitton merle and char4u by asking for art request but now im more into making inprovment with my ary then asking and mabey 1 day people will ask me for a art request (when my scanner gets fixed) but i digress this is sooo funny soooo cool and ssooo true i gots to add on to the faves
That is about as true as it comes. You have to admit it is funny though.
Usually if I ask for a request I first ask if it's ok. But if they're busy I tend not to bother. I know how it feels too as I USED to draw. But that part didn't have to do with people asking for art. I just got bored of doing it. That and there was complete un-interest in my stuff.

Oh, I like this! I believe Foxy was talking about this one day, the way everyone expects artists (I'm pretty sure that's the way it is for most artists) to just give art away for free. Hello??!?! It takes time and effort, just like any other job, so we should get paid for it! Besides, considering what some people charge, I think that the people demanding free art are getting a bargain! I'm favoriting this!
I once had a guy who said I should draw for him, and I told him I only do requests for friends, and that if he was willing to pay me, I'd be glad to. He sid he would let me READ HIS POETRY and that would INSPIRE ME to draw for him. >_> When I declined, he took a shitfit and freaked out saying other artists had done it and I was a greedy, selfish bitch. XD
*snorts coffee thru nose* He would "let" you read his poetry... in exchange for art? O wow. That's a new one for me.
Beats what I usually get ..... "If you draw (some number of images) I'll print them in my (insert project here) and if they make any money I'll send some to you."

I had the same experience, potentially with the same person.... except it was his stories. He would try sending them to me on AIM, and I would constantly tell him I didn't want to download them, but I "would glance over them" if he provided a link. I only started saying that after one of the files he sent me ended up being not only a 10 page story of poorly written dialogue, but also many many pictures of references that he had specifically marked for me (of clothes the characters would wear, and hairstyles they would have, and sex toys they would play with etc...) of which totaled I think 50 or 75 in all.
O my ....
Reminds me of the basement trolls I used to deal with when I worked in a comic shop. Cardboard boxes full of dirty scraps of paper shoved across the counter, that I would be "permitted" to look through and reminded constantly how it was destined to be a great Role-Playing Game, with dire warning not to copy his work. Usually followed by an hour long rant on how TSR "stole" his idea for a race of cat people. Totally original that, cat people......

lol Awesome! It's too true though, You mention paying and most sink down and are like "...p...paaayyy?" I was doing 3d stuff for a while but people started wanting me to make them, I mentioned that it takes like weeks to get it to look right and they were like "Oh, never mind then" so it's not only they don't want to pay, they don't want to wait either.
Cute comic though ^.^

I agree with you not only it take time but you need to make it right, if you don't meet there expectation they aren't gonna like it. I've been working for the pass year in gaming design and concept. I've learn one very important thing: Client are your worst nightmare. Even if you do exactly what they want, they gonna find something to complain about and you're gonna have to restart all over again and again until you have it right. Most of the time when it is right it isn't resembling the original concept anymore and you work double the amount of time.
the point is that there will always be people like this and we artist from all over the world need to live with it even if we don't like it

LOL this made me really laugh XD
Kinda reminds me of the time someone wanted to commission me for a wolfhome pose and i charged somewhere between 8 to 10 bucks for one I think, and this person said i was greedy for not doing it for free because it was for his sick grandma who was in the hospital and really liked wolves.
...the wolf was some outrageous color, and wtf is grandma gonna do with a wolfhome pose?
Needless to say when I said I only take commissions no freebies i got called a bitch. My my!

So true, so very very true.
I have had emails asking for a request, I said I might draw if I find the time and inspiration.. after that I got bombarded with 15 emails with EVERY nitpickey detail they could find about what I would have to draw. We're talking pink cheetah spotted tigers with purple highlights and my goodness I was lost after the 8th email or so.
I pretty much deleted it, then weeks later I started getting emails asking for progress and demanding their picture.. What the heck o_O
So yes, vending machine. Spot on image.

The last panel reminds me those warning labels I see in every vending machine that depicts a vending machine falling on top of a person.

I'm commenting again. Yes, I commented yesterday, but I want to comment again. I want this poster sized and I want to put it up in my studio. XD This is absolutely hysterical and I can't stop staring at it. I also TOTALLY understand the emotions of the HollyAnn vending machine... and it's hysterical that the vending machine has emotions. XD So so so great job on this. I must spread this around so everyone will see it!
I totally support this comic, it's sad to say there are quite a few people in the fandom who expect art out of thin air, forgetting the very fact that this is the ONLY fandom that you can get CUSTOM artwork for a price. Try and get stan Lee or Katsuhiro Otomoto draw something for you at a convention XD
the only reason I gave to people when they're acting like this is: I make you pay because I need to buy new pencil once and a wild,
do you know what one of them told me after that,: You're not gonna use all your pencil doing my drawing so make people pay when you need new pencil
after that kind of reply I stop doing commissions now I'm only doing trade art and gif art for my friends

You're welcome, and thank you! =D
I've actually been asked that before...I don't have prints made of it, nor have I had prints made of it either...Maybe I should dig up the original, re-scan it and re-colour it so I can offer prints of it XD It just never dawned on me at the time to make prints of it, but seeing as it's pretty popular, I'll see what I can do :)

Ogawd, ilu. I think I'll save my breath by just sending this submission link to people who think I'm "mean" because I won't be their free-art-slave... (because if you are artistic, its obviously your DUTY to cater to everyone's whim for nothing in return, DUH!)
Although many of "these" sort of folks might not be quite bright enough to understand whats going on in this comic strip. :(

Well really, if you say this comic makes no sense, you'd also have to say that an opposing comic about artists who don't do the art they are paid for, also doesn't make sense. Your basis for saying this doesn't make sense is based off of the fact that it isn't always true, but then neither is the reverse. In reality, there are many people who gladly pay for their commissions. There are also many artists who gladly do art when you pay them. Obviously, this comic is not making a statement about _all_ people who request art or commission art of artists. So rather, instead of the comic "not making sense" for its targeted subject (which it does), your comment does not make sense, because of its failing to view the actual point of the comic, and the reality that while not always true, it is still sometimes (and sadly frequently) true :) Have a nice day.
Also you replied to a TWO month old post, which to me is either you're very bored, or a fan boy trying to defend an artist. if you're going to make a statement or a counter argument, try and at least make it a WEEK AFTER I made a post. This comic is making a jab of course at those who ask for commissions and bitch when they gotta pay, which in itself is idiotic cause the idea of COMMISSION is to PAY for a service rendered. Also, you made a statement that I said "this comic makes no sense" I never said this comic made NO sense, you assumed I thought it made no sense. I merely said I don't want to count in response to what the commenter above me earlier posted. There are people that DON'T get this comic, which is dumb because it does make plenty of sense. So next time, try and make some sense in your "analyst" before you try and act smart on the internet.............................

personally... I don't mind getting requests from people I know or even the occasional random note/request (provided they are polite and honest about what they want). People need to understand that commissions come before requests (I mean we are being paid to do this stuff) requesting people should also understand they are asking for a free pic which will take time for us to do. I had someone asking for a highly detailed yiff pic between two people (he even went so detailed as to tell what kind of underwear his character was wearing) and wanted a background....that's two full characters, detailed clothes and background...for free.
Speaking of which, I'd love to do an art trade with you sometime Holly, love your work!

In regards to that guy who wanted all that stuff for free, I would've showed him this picture instead ;)

As for doing a trade, sure! If you keep up with my FA journal here, just keep an eye on it...I've got several projects going on right now, but I'll probably post there whenever I'm accepting trades again :)

I wasn't planning on favoriting anything on this account, but this earned it. Excellent post, and I see I'm a few years late in the viewing. As a note, I am a buyer who doesn't mind paying, out of respect and gratitude for the work that those who do art put into what they love.
I'm a bit late on the comment train here but this made me laugh and its so true, so I had to fave. Luckily, I haven't run into anyone like random kitty yet, everyone I've dealt with has been more than happy to pay for my art and I've never had any complaints about my timing or anything. Though I have had days where I feel like all I do is pop out art for other people. I guess as an artist you just have to stand your ground, be specific about what you're willing to give and if someone whines about having to pay, tell them to go find another artist. They need you, you do not need them. ;)
As for the ones who say they've paid and never gotten their art, be careful who you do business with!

I've had a few in the past that got really angry/upset at me because I didn't do free art...I did free art when I was just starting out, and once I got married and after some convincing from friends that people would be willing to pay me to draw their characters, I started doing paid commissions. I just hate it whenever people come to me and out-right ask "Can you draw me for free? No?! Well..YOUR ART SUCKS THEN!" *blinkblinks* If my art sucks, then why did you ask for free art from me then? LOL! XD
Thankfully I don't get people like that very often :) But I've had it enough times that I just had to spur this out and it's something that everyone who's an artist/writer/musician/etc. in the fandom can relate to XD
