The Independence can handle several capital ships at once. While she is not an aircraft carrier her weapons array is pretty advanced (in my universe) and her manueverability is much higher than usual for ships that large. I've never worked out the specs, but generally it is assumed that the Independence is at least 3,000-3,500 feet long with several heavy weapons in the front and and numerous countermeasures and smaller arms constructed in the side and dorsal hull.
They were on a research trip and collected samples on a seemingly dead planet.
On the planet one of the human scientists was infected with a disease.
The others then took him back to the ship.
There were no further reports, but 24 hours later the ship jumped into hyperspace directly into this Star-System.
Maybe the ship's computer had a malfunction. ;3
