"My name is Abigail Reed, but everyone calls me Abby. I work as a nurse on the late shift at the local hospital. I was working in the emergency room when I went outside for a break. No sooner had I gotten ready to go back inside when a man ran up to me in a panic. I tried to help him but he bit me on the arm. When some security came out to help me I told them I was fine and went inside to wrap up the bite in a bandage. I probably should have reported it but I was embarrassed to admit it. I don't know, maybe I should have. I doubt it would've made a difference. I just.... I've learned not to call attention to my problems.
Maybe it's easy for other people, but for me it just gets me into trouble. I knew that if it was reported that it would result in a lot of attention and paperwork and if I needed treatment it'd be another bill I couldn't afford. The bite wasn't that deep, I probably wouldn't even notice it in a day or two. I just wrapped it up and went back to work. I've had worse, the wrist fracture I got at my apartment was more painful than this bite. Logan would probably tell me I should get the thing looked at, to hell with what Russell would say.
What, I didn't mention Russell? He's my boyfriend, we share a small apartment. I don't get out much so he's kind of my whole world. He's got his flaws, I guess, but it's hard to afford rent when you're just starting out so it made sense when he suggested I move in with him. I know that he likes horses, he's always watching them race. He's always in the best moods when his favorite wins. I think it's name is Sunset Runner. I don't know how it works, but he's always calling one of his boys and placing a bet on him. I can't complain, since it keeps me in good food and I feel special when one of the ponies does well. He says that there's nothing finer than a grand won on a good horse race. Of course, when he loses money he always gets in a bad mood. Usually the victim is whatever 'crap' I've made for dinner that night. I'm not a gourmet, I know. I try though.
Oh yes, back to my wound. I saw the patient later, he apologized for biting me. He convinced me to go for a coffee with him to say thank you. He seemed so nice, but he kept looking around the area like he was expecting something to jump out at him. Nothing did. After our coffee he thanked me again and we parted ways. I don't know what he was about, but I know everyone has a story. Like most he probably just didn't want to share the details.
When I got back to the hospital I felt weird. I don't know, like my head was pounding. I went to the locker room for a few minutes to sit down and clear my head. As soon as I sat down, I felt strange all over. My body itched and I felt this odd pressure in my sinuses and the top of my head. My feet got stiff and wouldn't move. All of the sudden this thing burst out of my shoes, I guess it was a hoof. Right about then I jumped to my (hooves?) and my other shoe fell off, mercifully intact. I could see this big long muzzle in front of my face and my hands were covered in white fur. My fingertips were hard as my toes. I felt something waving behind me that looked a lot like a tail, and before I felt it I knew. I reached my hand up to my head and felt something long sticking out of my hair higher than I could reach.
I didn't know what I was, I don't watch a lot of discovery channel. All I know is someone that heard the noise asked me if I was done changing. I didn't stick around to find out who. I ran for the nearest exit. I couldn't let anyone see me like this, least of all go home in this state. I needed someplace to lay low for a while. I found this flyer for some kind of convention, maybe everyone will think it's a costume..."

A were-gemsbok, huh? That's a new one on me! She's a cutie, though, and even though she's got a pretty awkward time ahead of her - can't imagine how she'd explain this to the boyfriend! - I'm really curious to see what happens next! Also, she's lucky it was just her shoes that got shredded and not her scrubs!
Also, great to see another Abigail about. It's such a pretty name.

I pretty much let the story tell me what I needed, and I knew I needed a werewolf chick, a transgender werewolf, and since I like variety, the other two had to be something else. I loved
acyx's character, so I made a gemsbok from that inspiration. ;)
Fortunately for her, she won't need to explain her change to him, but you'll see why later. ;) She has a couple of tears in the leg, but at least the top is still good. :)
I liked the name Abby for her, so Abigail as the long form really worked for me. :)

I can't believe I hadn't already commented on this one. Sorry about that! But I find the idea of a were-gemsbok to be quite fascinating. You don't often see herbivore based were-creatures, which I suppose isn't that surprising but kind of a shame nevertheless. I love the set-up for this, too and how you've given her such a thorough past and so many potential problems already. I noticed in your comment to Grace that she won't have to hide her transformation from her boyfriend, which is probably a good thing since it sounds like they don't have the healthiest relationship in the world. But I do wonder what lengths she'll have to go to in order to keep her secret from becoming common knowledge. Especially if she's ever called on to do a night shift at the hospital. Or if she'll be able to! I'm really looking forward to seeing where you'll go with her, and with your other were-creatures as well.
The art is simply gorgeous, and I love how well the artist captured her look of surprise and the artfully shredded pants legs and shoes. She's luckier than some weres who come busting out of their clothing, I guess, but as I recall those scrubs aren't cheap! It's too bad she can't visit Ciara for some appropriate shoes, either, as I imagine hooves on hospital linoleum could be a bit of a problem.

I often find it hard to come up with a cast of all one species, it just isn't how I'm wired, so I knew that I was going to have two werewolves and several other were species in the series. That said, I had been looking for an excuse to create a gemsbok character for a while so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to slip a character into the role. ;)
In order to know where characters are going and who they are, it's really important to at least have some idea of what their life was like. I know more than a few writers who just create blank slates and try to come up with reasons later or things that don't quite fit, but I had some fairly specific things I knew I wanted for her so I needed the proper background. It's also the first time I've ever written for someone in an abusive relationship so I tried to convey that without saying it. Still, a few members of our cast have secrets to keep and not all of them are related to being a were-creature. :) Right now, Abby has to worry about getting somewhere she can stay out of sight!
No doubt no one expects to turn into a were gemsbok in the middle of their shift. At least she has one shoe intact though I don't know what good one shoe would do, haha.
