Nevada is a very good place to find that 1960s Ford wagon. Very dry - about half the relative humidity of the Sahara Desert most of the year. The rain is alkaline, not acid, so the rust is very dense and superficial, like the browning on an old rifle or shotgun. No road salt. I have found abandoned auto body parts out in the desert dating back about 80 years, most of the paint sand blasted off by sand storms, but still structurally sound. When you are ready, I have a fine mechanic friend that can use the old fashioned grapevine to try to find that old car in a barn or a rural junk yard that would never be listed in Hemmings or on eBay. He can also put the mechanical and electrical systems in good running condition. Then you drive it to Mexico for upholstry, body work, painting, and rechroming, if needed. (I sparklys, and the 60s Fords had lots of bold chrome.) We are over 200 miles from the nearest car crusher, so there are lots of old vehicles in old small town junk yards and on ranches and farms.
sounds very promising, but it might take me more than ten years to gather the funds to even consider it. but I'd love to, trust me. :)
I once thought that going for a vehicle in the desert states and hunting downa good interiour in the northern, less sun-baked states might work. that way one sees more of that country.
we have a 'mexico' here, too. you would take your classic and head over to poland or czech republik and have it fully restaurated by dedicated craftsmen for a little more than the paint and upholstery job would have costed you in germany. :P

I'm aware of that. :) too numerous are the stories to be beheld within european classic-car scenes about best buys from the US, where they found out that "Showroom Conditioned" means just that. :) the terms and understandings are just too different to buy from the net, unless you know the other side well.
