I'm scared of balloons. When I see a balloon, I can't take my eyes of it because I'm scared someone will pop it. Actually, I hate all loud noises (thunder, fireworks) but balloons are worst because they are everywhere. There's nothing I hate more than a kid messing with a balloon in a subway car or in the bus because I can't get away!!! You know that squeaky sound ballons make? It send shivers down my spine.

I actually used to be afraid of not balloons, but them popping!
I always thought the force of the pop would hurt my hands or something. ;)
So finally I just popped on at the egging of my friend and I'm cured!
As for loud noises ... a lifetime of horror films made me numb to those. XD

Then we were in the same boat. XD
And I don't like the cheap scares ones that much because I go to horror films with my mother (tradition. She's had me on horror films since I was like two years old!) but everytime something startles her she freaks out and hits me in reflex. D:
THAT'S fear!

it's Frank the green balloon!
you sure Frank isn't the reason you're afraid of balloons?

I'm scared of the loud noise if it pops so I'm scared of everything inflatable if it has a chance to pop loudly. For example: I'm not afraid of a beachball in normal circumstances. But if I see someone trying to stand on a beachball, I'm going to be scared it's gonna go bang. It's the potential of a bang that scares me, not the balloon itself.
I totally sympathize having gone through the same thing myself my entire life. I tried popping a balloon myself to get over the fear but it doesn't help when someone else is in control of popping or possibly popping the balloon. :( Wish I could help you but you have my hugs.
There's a guy on YouTube (happycabbie) who does amazing balloon sculptures. He promised me there is no balloon popping in his tutorial videos so I'll start by watching those and get used to seeing balloons being handled and make that squeeky sound. Then, I'll see...
Speaking of sounds... You know another sound that gives me cold sweat? The sound of a balloon being inflated from an helium tank. That "woooosh" sound? Brrrrrr!

I'm always gentle with balloons! And careful they don't go near pointy plants, candles, get stepped on or even stay in the sun too long because if the air inside dilates too much, it pops without provocation. Yep... You can say I'm a specialist at ways balloons can pop!
P.S. I love your avatar even if there's a balloon in it!

You're right: balloons rarely pop by themselves. But people who are not afraid of the popping sound are not as careful with them. Example: I was at a party and people were tossing a balloon around. I was ok with it. The problem was that there was a pointy dry plant right beside them and the balloon kept going in that direction. It got me so upset and had to go outside in the backyard, plugging my ears with my fingers. And of course, the balloon did end up on the plant and pop.
First off: Don't click my icon and go though my gallery if you're phobic to the point that looking at them drawn gets you too.
Dude, I can totally sympathize with you.
"The worst thing is that sometimes, when you tell people you're scared of something, they immediatly feel the urge to do it to you."
Especially this too.
Tip from personal experience: If someone taunts you for it and you're holding something sharp, get rid of the sharp object if at all possible before doing anything else. Though that's a bit easier said than to do. But that whole thingy where people exploit what you fear is pretty much all I remember of two different schools I've been to. (And it's extremely difficult trying to explain you don't remember much of assaulting someone when you're already tripping over the situation because of your own fear, and then hardly anyone wants to believe you when you can't tell the story straight.)
I tried to deal with it by viewing videos of it over the net, but that didn't really help so much as invert the situation. So it's still awkward for me to be near them when they're not mine and totally away from others, but for totally different reasons than it used to be.
Public situations still suck though, as I desire control over it all and generally have none. This has been tested to its limits as far as it can possibly go, though, due to the introduction of my niece to the family. But I know she's just being a kid, whether it bothers me or frustrates me or not.

No, I'm ok looking at them. I'm even ok watching a video of a balloon getting popped if I turn the sound way down. It's really the sound and the potential of the sound that gets me. For example, if there are balloons in a party where the music is really loud, I'll be more or less ok because I'll barely hear the balloon if it pops. Also, if the thunder gets a bit too loud for my liking, I'll be less nervous if I listen to my MP3 and close the blinds so I don't see the lightning (cause the anticipation is a lot worst than the actual fear the sound causes me when it arrives).
Fortunately, nobody has taunt me in a long time. I think my boyfriend just hadn't understood the level of my fear, he'd never do it again. He even tells people to be careful with balloons around me. People in the fandom have been very understanding. I think if I did get taunt, I'd just curl up in a ball with my finger in my ears and wait for it to be over.
I wish I could get a bit better. I know I'll probably never like popping balloons but I wish I could be in the same room as people playing with balloons without cowering in a corner with my fingers in my ears...
