I was in high school when the Challenger was lost, and I remember exactly where I was. When a kid at school said the shuttle had exploded, I thought at first they were making a sick joke, like kids often do. Then one of the teachers (a librarian, I think) confirmed it. :(
How eerie/odd/appropriate (not sure of the right word(s)) that the Challenger's flag survived almost completely intact.
It reminds me, chillingly, of a passage from the National Anthem: "...the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air/Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there..." Creepy....
Challenger and Columbia (and *many* other such incidents) remind us that, sadly, there is no progress without sacrifice. Ad astra per aspera: "To the stars, through hardship." :/
