This is an entry for
Lil-Maj's contest with Asian culture as its theme. I want to show a tiny bit part of my Indonesia culture in this picture. Indonesia is a multicultural nation, we have lots of traditional culture from different tribes. So that's why we have so many various traditional attires, arts, languages, architectures, martial arts, crafts, and cuisines!
Each of Maj's characters here represent each traditional attire from different tribes.(From left to right):
- Mory: Dayak. Borneo is the 3rd largest island in the world. Dayak are the native people of Borneo, and there are over 260 tribes in Borneo.
- Patch: West Papua. West Papua located in New Guinea, it renowned as the 2nd largest island in the world. Patch was wearing the traditional attire called Serui. On the head he wore ornate cenderawasih bird or known as birds of paradise.
- Prince Rigel: Bali. Pulau Dewata or Island of Gods, that's what we Indonesian always refer to Bali. The island is home to most of Indonesia's Hindu. There are three kind of its traditional attire, for religious ceremony (agung), wedding/celebration (madya), and daily activity. Not only has a value of beauty, but each of it also has philosophical and symbolic value hidden in form, function, and meaning.
- Layla: Bugis. The Buginese people are an ethnic group come from South Sulawesi, Sulawesi is the third largest island of Indonesia. Its traditional attire for woman is called 'baju bodo', also known as the oldest attire in the world. Each color in Baju Bodo indicate the age or the dignity of the wearer.
- Maj (front left): Sunda. Maj was wearing 'iket' or 'totopong' (in Bali it called 'udeng'), a head cover for every man daily use in West Java. In the past, it was believed that it can protect from evil spirit besides from practical function as wrappers, pads for lifting loads on their heads, etc.
- Amaya (front right): Sasak. Most population in Lombok island are Sasak people. The traditional attire for Sasak woman is called 'Lambung'.
In the background, you can see Borobudur temple, the worlds biggest Buddhist monument, and it considered by UNESCO to be one of the worlds seven wonder.
Behind Mory, there is a Reog Ponorogo dancer called Singo Barong. The dancer of Singo Barong bear the mask about 30 - 40 kg weight and supported by the strength of their teeth.
And last on the stall is a line of Wayang Kulit. It's a traditional art of shadow play mainly in Java and Bali. Kulit means skin, it usually use buffalo or cow leather to make the puppet and supported with buffalo horn for handles and control rods.
I hope I can share the uniqueness and differentiation of Indonesia make a beautiful unity as one nation. We have a phrase to describe it, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which means unity in diversity.
