Surprises? Nope. Pretty much every treasure chest in the game is a mimic, to play on the fact that the game's world is filled with ravenous demons. As such, mimics are all over the place, just waiting for victims to come wandering by.
As for the merchant, he's just a boss, and the cage is one of his main mechanics.

...every chest is a mimic? That is a cruel way to play with the laws of temptation. I haven't even gotten past the prison area after learning the hard way that the fight against the 5 summoners was fixed... unless that was a glitch... in which case, I guess it was set in ancient prophecies for me to lose all along.
On a side note, to highlight where I game over'd to my friend, I ended up recording my playthrough up to where I hit that metaphorical wall... although for obvious reasons, I couldn't really upload it anywhere...

Once again, a bit of a cheap shot. Worked so hard to get to level 8 so I could take stand a chance in taking them on, and when I knocked the middle one to zero, I first assumed it was a glitch, like maybe a hiccup in the code & another attack would fix it. But then as I knocked down the last two summoners, I watched in dismay as I got seasoned heavily by the middle summoner.
I guess if its a condolance, I believed in the power of seperate saves so when I bring myself to play again, I can at least figure out where I screwed up before the fight & sort out how to get out of the prison.
Don't think I don't like the game, though. Maybe it was the bet that egged me on, but I haven't been kept on the edge of my seat by an RPG since Knights of the Old Republic.
