I'm glad someone really appreciates the maw design for what it is. I always felt that it made a lot more sense to keep with the mouth design and work with it. The internal structure is based originally slightly around a mold-like design of a barrel cactus with moist internal plant flesh and those spines are essentially bristle-like protrusions that act in place of a tongue.
