Evil Twin 132 - The Scheme Of Things
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
Hiya folks, I know this is where I usually make a joke of some sort, but this week I need to get a little serious.
...and it has to do with why this week's Evil Twin was extra-late.
You see, today's Evil Twin is the first one that got called on account of rain.
For the past ten years, my computer has been plugged into, and protected by a battery backup unit. Our area tends to be prone to power outages, especially during the warmer months when everybody starts switching their air conditioning on and putting the power grid under stress. And that goes quadruple when a thunderstorm rolls through and starts flinging lightning bolts around. So, the battery backup has become a necessity, and it's saved my bacon on a number of occasions.
Power goes out, computer stays on, and I have plenty of time to save whatever I'm working on.
Anyway, the Battery Backup is dead. It has brand new batteries, but it suddenly doesn't charge. The batteries drain out almost instantly, and the computer just won't stay on while plugged into it. A chat session with the company tech support ended with the announcement that the charge circuit was most likely fried by a lightning strike. It's about as dead as dead can be.
And today, we got hit by a constant barrage of one thunderstorm after another, all day. Since this computer is basically my office, and my job, I couldn't risk anything happening to it. So it spent the day unplugged and powered off. Which meant no art happened. And therefore no Evil Twin.
I did not actually put pen to paper (or in this case, wacom to photoshop) until after midnight.
HOWEVER... all is not lost. And this is the important bit.
I was able to use my iPad to buy a new battery backup off amazon today. And I was able to do this because of the donations being made to my Patreon by the small handful of loyal "Minions of Talboc" who pledge their spare change week after week to keep this comic going. Twenty five cents here, a dollar there. it added up.
The new battery backup will be arriving sometime on or before the 17th, so I've got to be extra-careful until then, as I'm only plugged into a wall strip for now. But once it arrives, I will be back up to full power, no matter what the weather is like.
Your donations keep us going, and this has never been more true than today. To those who donated, many thanks. And to those of you haven't... why not give it a try?
Thanks, everybody!

..heh... clearly not the first... doubtly the last... Once I got a good (and expensive) UPS (power backup) and was happy.... only to have one of the worst thunderstorm to hit the area over a month latter - and one of the rare times I left it on while of at work because family would visit and they might want to watch TV while staying the night at my room... the joys of digital controled electronics - dead circuit boards / cards...
..well, pray the storm to spare your area for a while then.. or as I say, Gentle winds and clear skyes.. ^.^

Hey, I'm always willing to forgive lateness do to a lightning strike.
I'm one of the few people who know exactly how little a charge
is needed to fry up a computer's motherboard like it was bacon.
I'm glad though that you were able to order a replacement so fast.
Hopefully the weather holds till then.
And yes Doomsday secret is secret if you're the only one
who knows about it.
