I think about the same time he proposed... Technically, in the strictest sense he probably shouldn't have this kind of deciding power, it would generally devolve to a selected councilor, but this kind of bending of the rules is more-or-less alright for decisions not directly regarding treatment. If they were married, then he'd have a clear direct claim (so long as he wasn't responsible for or contributing to the issue), but I'm guessing the fact that she had a preexisting romantic relationship and, while in a clearly sane moment in front of a witness, agreed to his proposal, put him 'close enough' for the doctor.

*nods* it all depends on a case by case basis depending on what hospital you go to, Some hopsitals only recognise married spouses and blood relatives as next of kin, but other hospitals recognise unmarried partners as next of kin. Its all luck of the draw.

Interesting. I wonder if this means that Paul will learn more about Gems past and what his thoughts on it will be.

Do they really have records on her family history? I thought it would take the magic of sage to unveil Gem's darkest secrets.

The hospital doesnt but they could apply for them for example she would have a birth certificate which would give the names of her biological parents they would also need her medical records and could apply to access things like foster/adoption certificates/paperwork if it was deemed in her interest to do so.

I'm happy the restraints are removed, and I'm happy that Paul is really stepping up. It shows he really does love her, which we've known since early in the story. Now, off to read the next page.

Hes her partner hes told them that at the desk. Here in the uk depending on the hospital that would either get you next of kin rights or not. And since the doc has witnessed them both together and theyre acting together his discretion is to accept the partner as next of kin.
