Part of the commission was to have a speech bubble. He leaves it to the artist to decide what to put in it. I had no idea what I was going to put there the entire time I was painting and at the last minute it struck me. I'd react the same way if someone likened me to Barney.

I read an article once of a guy who'd become catatonic as a child due to a rare medical condition. He grew up being cared for and eventually had to be moved to a care facility. He stayed there for years. His body didn't work, but his mind was fully functional. Every day, they'd move him to a dayroom, plunk him in front of a tv and play the same Barney VHS over and over and over, thinking his brain was not active.

After many years of this, when he was in his adult years, his condition was finally accurately diagnosed and a type of cure or treatment was found, allowing him to regain the use of his body. I will never forget reading him express his hatred for Barney.

To me, Barney is now inextricably linked to that poor guy's story. What a nightmare.
