Here it is, the sketch of page one for my adult furry comic, "Here There Be Dragons". I started commissioning the great Kjartan Arnorsson back in 2008 to draw up a comic that had been bouncing around my mind for about three years. And now it's finally gotten started. I hope to have the first part of this comic done in 2009, but we'll see.
I actually only had a fairly vague idea of how the first page would look. I'm a very big fan of the "panorama zoom-in" technique of storytelling, where you start off with a wide view of the world the story is set in, and as you narrow your view and close in on a specific spot, the main characters eventually come into view.
I gave Kjartan pretty much his hands free with this pic, which I think he appreciated. I wanted a medieval setting in the wilderness, with some large towns in the background, with mountains off in the distance. Eventually we zoom in on the little village where our story begins.
My only quirk about this sketch was the little boat in the water up in the upper right corner of panel #1. I wanted a fairly isolated setting up in the mountains, so putting the sea and a ship in the scene didn't quite fit in. The rest of the page worked just fine.
I put this in the "Mature" section in part because of the situation, and in part because where the comic leads.
