because he doesn't want to look at the convention that's going on. He isn't looking at anyone, he's just looking away from the joyful time that's going on in front of him. You'll see this action happen a ton in movies, anime, cartoons etc etc. It's a very effective way to show dismay, a feeling of rejection and all around sadness at a certain event/action/subject.
It's almost the same for me, I live in Florida lol So all I have is Megaplex. FWA is definitely out of the way for me, but not totally unreachable. Just takes a lot more planning. But everything else is basically the same for me as it is for you-- all the way across the country :s
