Yeah, they can get pretty hot sometimes. One trick we use to use was a gel-pak vest (I also took a vest and made a pair of 'shorts' as well to keep things cool). You could have a pair of them and slip them on over a t-shirt (and boxers) and they'd last half a day before you needed to slip on the second set. It can really get cooking in those things out on hot pavement in the summer all day long. One last trick was to slips a cabbage leaf between the top of your head and whatever 'headgear' you had to have on. It really helped cool you off.
