Quest: "Wasteland Survival Guide"
Description: "There is a book in the Pewter City Elementary School library that could help me immensely. But apparently nobody has been in there in decades if not a century; not even the Raider gangs want anything to do with the place. Something about it being haunted. But there's no such thing as ghosts and I have to get that book."
Oh Caitlyn... You've tempted fate! Not only is the school haunted as those rumors said, but these aren't your typical ghosts!
During the Great War, untold millions were killed by the hellfire of Judgement-class nuclear warheads. The heat from the shock waves was enough to flash incinerate and flash cremate almost everything organic, reducing it to ashes and leaving behind a "nuclear shadow" on the ground or walls.
But that wasn't horrific enough. Scant months before the war, the military had paid the school board to conduct an experiment in the basement. The goal of the experiment was to attempt to catch and detain enemy ghost-type infiltrators. The experiment failed in its specific aim and the project was to be scrapped.
When radiation and Infinity Energy was released in the nuclear blasts, the souls of those who were flash vaporized became infused with some of the Infinity Energy before they could pass on. The machine in the basement received a large influx of power from the event, creating an imprisonment field around the school that prevented these souls from leaving the mortal world. But things got worse.
The infusion the trapped souls received had allowed them the ability to manipulate physical objects. These souls were now also inhabiting their own nuclear shadows, trapped in a perpetually permanent limbo by the experimental machine in the basement. This had earned them the nickname of "Shadow Ghosts" by the locals and it also earned them a lot of fear from the same.
A Shadow Ghost is more or less an echo of the 'mon it belonged to in life. The soul of its owner now inhabits it, unable to perceive the world like the living can. Instead, a Shadow Ghost perceives the world as it once was before the war, forced to re-live the memories of its last hours of life in a never-ending cycle. It cannot see or hear you, nor will it react to anything that happens around it. It is trapped in a cycle of repetition, performing the actions of its final hours over and over like a broken record. And for the record, they are ambulatory and while they can speak, their voices are literal whispers.
But the truly terrifying thing about these Shadow Ghosts is not the fact that you can only see their shadows, its the fact that "physical" contact with one will pull your consciousness into the ghost's memories. It changes your perception of reality. You'd see the environment as it had been before the Wasteland was born. And with your perceptions so altered you could potentially walk into rubble and impale yourself on a chunk of rebar without knowing it (besides the sudden pain).
The only known way to save someone from this fate is to get them at least five yards away from the ghost without making contact with any other ghosts nearby. For if you don't...if they don't die from an accident, the memory of being burned alive by Judgement's hellfire will certainly do the job.
The Pewter City High School has earned a reputation from its unique brand of haunting. It isn't hard to see why the local Raider Gangs won't go anywhere near that cursed place.
