So another rant...
Her last name is Gruff right?
I'm just assuming because of ol' Grandpa.
<.< Correct me if I'm wrong... Anyways!
I remember when I first started watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and while, at the time not really getting it, I did start to take a bit of joy in seeing extra characters outside the primary protagonists. It was interesting to see other characters, like antagonists and support characters playing a large enough role to be a foil for other characters to play off of. It was interesting to see Celestia fuck off and do nothing, and have everyone else scramble around trying to fix the issue. It was amusing to see Flim and Flam roll in, CLEARLY shifty as all fuck, and juuuuust barely fail on their way out. And I found it kinda interesting to see a character like Gilda appear, someone that doesn't actually have a clear motive, no set rule, no true goal or anything just a friend from the past, looking to hang out.
Gilda didn't represent any over arching character role in society like the Princesses, nor was she any manner of looming threat like King Sombra, Discord or ... that one guy with the horns and dragon ball powers... What's his name? TRex.
Gilda was just an ordinary person looking to kick flav with an old friend, and couldn't assimilate to the ways of the ponies with enough tact. I was kind of feeling for Gilda in the end of her episode when she tried to pull Rainbow Dash over to her side, only to be shunned again. I mean, the situation did get out of hand, and she may not have reacted in the best way... but at the same time, how in the hell else are you supposed to react when you're being laughed at, not just by strangers... but by the people you know in a den of strangers? It's kind of a backwards world and Gilda, being a griffin, was prone to anger... so why not react accordingly?
I'm not justifying Gilda's actions in any way to be honest, I just sympathize with the lady. Since I've been in the same situations where I've reunited with someone whom I was amazing friends with... only for one or both of us to be so far different it's more awkward than pleasurable to be in each others presence. So instead of having the fun we should be having, we're actually looking for an out so we can back off and never speak again. Only, it wasn't going that way for Gilda and Rainbow Dash, they were having fun, they were enjoying each other's company and they genuinely were still friends, only everyone else was the problem... for Gilda at least.
Now, I haven't been keeping up with all the Friends Forever comics, so I can't actually say I've been following all of Gilda's exploits on paper, but seeing her again in Griffin Stone just scummin' it was fun. And knowing that some weird friendship shit is happening up there soon should hopefully bring her back... I'm super interested in getting the damn idol of Boreas back, or at least getting someone to do it so that Griffin Stone doesn't have to be a shit hole anymore, yeah?
Although to be fair, the reason why I hadn't read all of the comics ( which I think may be what...? 1 ... 2? ) that feature Gilda is because Jay Fosgit draws them... and I'm hideously sorry to say that that dude draws like goddamn shit. I mean, he may be talented in some fields but ponies isn't one of them... I'm not saying I'm a great artist... not by any means sadly... But *shudders* I sadly can't really deal with terribly drawn shit. Such is why a lot of popular Cartoon Network shows I'll just.... ignore now, since I can't feel the art style.
Anyways--enough of that shit... Back to Gilda.
So, Gilda isn't my favorite character, not even close. I just felt that early on Gilda was given the opportunity to do, say and represent a lot, but she didn't get enough of a shake to really do that. But on her subsequent returns she's shown clear signs of improvement and the devotion to want to improve even further, which is a good thing... although you rarely get anything opposite of that in FiM. I hadn't truly been graced with any of the 'I'm bad--and I like it' characters, or at least not outside of Chrysalis... buuut she needs to have more than one show appearance ( that's not a damn dimensional jump ) in order to prove or break that mold. So ... Gilda, possibly, Gruff... I'm honoring you today.
Or trying to at least...
