This piece is nothing more and nothing less than another wistful realisation that time is merciless and spares no one. We all have to face the fact that even though our time may be now, that 'now' is a fleeting, ephemeral thing.
As Lucius Annaeus Seneca said: "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end".
That particular line, of course, eventually made an appearance in the lyrics of Semisonic's 1998 song: Closing Time.
Other influences for this piece come from Robert Frost's poem Nothing Gold can Stay, and from Toad the Wet Sprocket's 1991 song Walk on the Ocean.

I need to stop watching people. Seriously. I've ended up where every time I look at my updates I stress out because there's so many and I feel overwhelmed. I think I'm going to make a bookmark tab for my top 20 most watched accounts and just focus on those.
There are some good people here-like you-who I used to talk with a bit more and don't look up often enough. Not saying I think it's something you spend time stressing out about. Just...I love your work and want to give these poems more than just a line or two. They're worth spending time on. Anyways...thank you, too. I probably would have given up on poetry a long time ago if it weren't for the fact I know there's a few good people like you who find it meaningful.
