Name: Mary Bourn
Location: Marshfield, MA
Date: 1743
Carver: "The Cat-Face Carver"
The only stone in the Winslow Cemetery in Marshfield to feature a stone carved by the unknown "Cat-Face Carver" from Bridgewater, who was active for all of seven years and who carved less than 50 stones.
He's been nicknamed that because most of his stones (located in his hometown) featured abstract geometric faces with a cat-like mouth.
This stone here was made not long before he quit the business. Once his stones began selling outside his hometown, he began adapting and expanding his style away from the faces for which he's been nicknamed. As such, Mary Bourn's stone does NOT feature a cat-face, but rather a blank scowl.
