This is the first chapter of a story I started working on a while back. The two primary inspirations were the song 'The Lion and the Unicorn' by The Men They Couldn't Hang, sections of which are included in the story; and early issues of John Constantine: Hellblazer.
That's the sort of feel I was going for in this, less 'superheroic' and more 'doing what you can to stem the tide before it washes you away'. There's a certain combination of history and cynicism that I feel is far more prevalent in England than here in North America.
I have three other chapters written so far, one of them a Christmas scene, so I may be uploading other sections later.

"Just remember that the Lion and the Unicorn are heroes of the people, not spandex-clad vigilantes like they have in the States."
Depends on the person being referenced, doesn't it? There are heroes of the people, or those who have their best interests firmly in mind, over and over again.
Then there's Jadestar. *whistles innocently*

"The Lion and the Unicorn,
Knew two barren sides, two battle lines;
No roundabouts or yieldings drawn,
Just nuclear motors and gasoline;
"They met each other by tooth and claw,
Autocannons, fusion wake events;
The marshalls, sergeants, and footmen,
They set atomic fire to the Thames;
"The Lion and the Unicorn, both,
Knew their needing now to talk;
Consider what might their future lose,
And so betwixt, cautiously walked;
"They told each other of their cubs,
Children of both Mankinds alike;
How many graves dug in shallow sod,
Or vanished in fusion-detonator light;
"The Lion and the Unicorn,
Were sick of battlefronts;
With blood instead of asphalt,
Fallen daughters and sons;
"So they sat down in tendered quiet,
Lioness across from Unicorn;
Grieving both, they did sustain,
Said he, 'Let's do our purpose better,'
Met she, 'We'll give it carousel again.'"
"The release of atomic power has changed everything except our way of thinking;
then the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind. If only I had known,
I should have become a watchmaker." -Albert Einstein, 1945.
