Like any sensible warrior, Illiath knows when to fall back.

The matter of whether Professor Shreve should have hands or claws was never completely resolved. A lot of minor characters in PF have hoof-hands already so the "It would make a change" argument didn't really wash. So, Shreve gets proper hands out of sheer practicality - whether they are his actual hands or the product of his shapeshifting abilities, I will leave up in the air.
