In today's episode, the [First of Eldest] has a flash-back within a flash-back, thinking back to the Imperial Convocation that was taking place at the same time Elfhame was locked in the tight embrace of a harsh winter.
It seems that many furs were taking a surprising amount of interest in Anastasia of Licksburg's eventual choice of a mate...and a few may have been willing to risk Imperial and Royal wrath to favour a certain suit...

Roland wisely speaks less than he knows. but asking to be a confidant is stretching trust a bit, especially for his high position.
He can't just say "I have a minor noble in Elfhame that would be a good mate for you" He would have to elevate Wintersloe.
and Prince Gawain would not have any of that on pain of death. if the matter in the south had went better, or perhaps if Phoebe Snow came back AND into his arms, (riding a Unicorn no less) he might look more favorably on our buck. I wonder what would happen if Anastasia tried to check Roland for scuti.
