I've had this conversation a million times, with people I'm still friends with.
Every time I try to push as well, suddenly their problem is magically me and the original problem stops being a problem for weeks or months. lol

Been there before, I sometimes trick people into ABC and other times i give them the ABC advise and they dont follow it, then some random stranger tells em to do ABC then they do it. :/ people be weird

I've had problems sorta like that, typically the justification is:

"I want to not do ABC more than I want to not have the problem; and I want to not have the problem more than I want to not waste time trying stuff that probably won't work. You may now provide either sympathy or a three-letter-pair that has not yet been mentioned."

when i saw this... my first thought of ABC, was the ABC store (Alcoholic Beverage Control), and thus reading through things all i could think was... they need booze to solve their problems
