So, why DID Mettaton decide to go crazy with trying to kill the human? Did they get too much attention from Alphys? Too much attention from the undergroudn in general, when Mettaton ought to be the only star they need? A general desire to be the greatest at everything?

well Alphys said she programmed him with Human killing but then regretted it and was too late to change her mind
