Mmkay so there could be a few reasons why, I'll list them off and whichever applies I'll have a fix for
-laptop will power on and work while plugged in, but immediately shuts off and holds no charge when plugged in overnight. This is because your laptop's battery is dead, either it had a surge and fizzled out or something happened, but you'll have to replace the battery for your laptop to work without being constantly plugged in to a power source 24/7
-laptop will power on and work, but doesn't charge despite the plug icon being near it. This could be anything from your battery going out to your cord having problems, or simply because you're not using one of the proprietary plugs that the laptop is designed to be used with, replace the cord with something either directly from the computer manufacturer or find one that will match up with its necessary power requirements.
hope this helps! I would say go with whatever's cheaper first, and if it doesn't work, use the other option, it could also be a good idea to simply replace both the battery AND charger cable for better charging and a new battery that can hold a charge longer
