Max watched as Otis left Charles, who looked as if he were told there was no Santa Claus. "I wonder what happened," the horse muttered to himself.
"Hm?" Bronx turned to look at Max. "Did you say something?"
"Just thinking out loud," Max said, shaking his head. "So anyway, you said you wanted to use the gym as part of the photoshoot?"
Bronx nodded, his eyes scanning the room from floor to ceiling. "Yup. It'll give the shoot a feel of realism. Putting Reggie and Otis in their 'natural habitat', so to speak, will put them at ease. Make them more pliable."
Max chuckled. "I can't think of either one of them as pliable."
"Oh, I know Reggie. I can get inside his head and make him do whatever I need doing for this shoot."
Max felt his hackles rise. Venti warned him about Bronx, but the jackal could be exaggerating. Hearing Bronx talk, however, pushed Max closer to believing one of his best gym members. "I'm sure Venti--I mean, Reggie--will be a good model."
"Oh yeah, no doubt," Max said, looking at Charles for a lengthy moment. "Maybe I should get a powerlifter in this shoot."
"So did your boss actually authorize using my gym?"
Bronx glanced over at Max, then resumed watching Charles. "Oh yeah, don't you worry about this, Max. I'll put your gym on the map. People are going to flock to this place."
Max slightly narrowed his eyes. If he'd had a bullshit detector, it might have been going off right about now. There was something about Bronx he didn't like, and it wasn't just from the stories Venti told about the bull. Bronx was trouble. He'd seen his kind before, the kind who made a bunch of promises without any real authorization to make them. And he was watching Charles for way too long. Max knew about the history between the bear and the jackal, and quite frankly, he could see why Venti didn't appreciate the presence of the bear.
Still, Max could at least hope for the best and plan for the worst. "That's great, Bronx. I know everything will work."
And if they didn't, well...
