Here it is, the answer to the mysterious question that just keeps getting asked, answered by someone who probably knows way too much on the subject.
Sorry about the wait! Lotta stuff happened, so I had to do stuff so there wouldn’t be too much stuff anymore. This might happen sometimes, but I’ve never once considered going on an official hiatus or anything; there’s so much of this story that I want to share, and I always get antsy when it’s been a while since a new page got posted.
This seems like as good a time as any to share, so listen up!
I started this comic under the assumption that it would barely ever get any attention, and that I was content with having something to draw to keep myself in the habit, in a way that was fun for me. Obviously, that changed a while ago, and this thing started getting a lot more attention than I ever anticipated. It was only at that point that I thought, “Hey, maybe I should go beyond thinking of this as just a little side hobby, and see where it goes!”
On one hand, the unexpected attention has lit a fire under my ass (in a good way!) and made me put more effort into improving my art style and speeding up the process, and got me to start doing things like commissions, which I never planned on when I started. But on the other, I realize that I just don’t have the free time I need to turn this comic into a full-time thing, with a goal of an update at a scheduled time every week.
At the moment, at least. I’m very close to getting my mountain of student loans paid off, and that alone requires me to spend a good 15-20 hours per work week freelancing to keep those bills paid, and have been slowly checking other things off my “Things that are getting in the way of drawing time” list in the meantime. I still see a good number of things I want to improve in my art style though, and I’d like to bulk up the archives a bit more before going “official” with this comic, and doing stuff like advertising it, or opening a Patreon.
So while there’s a lot of ways this could go in the future, I’m going to keep things around here on a smaller scale, at least until I’m sure I can produce new pages on a steady schedule and such. For now though, I continue to be overwhelmed with all the attention this comic has been getting. After almost 2 solid years of drawing this stuff, I’m still trying to wrap my head around the concept that some people out there really like the story, or the yinglets, or specific characters, etc etc, and want to see more of it. I mean, I know the feeling of finding a story/character/etc that I really get into, but the very idea that the stuff I’m drawing is that, to someone else? Crazy stuff, man.
I honestly hope I never get used to the feeling, because it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside each time I see that someone got a kick out of this story.
So all in all, I started this with no real expectations, got really surprised and motivated by the attention, and while I’m not yet ready to go full-time with this comic, I’m slowly working towards that longer-term goal, and am still thoroughly enjoying myself and sure as hell am not going to stop anytime soon. If a new page doesn’t come out on time, you can safely assume I’m off somewhere getting something done that I’d love to finish so I can get back to drawing ASAP.
Wow, that was a pretty heartfelt message for text below a comic about scav humpin’.

noble one: *studious, curiously studious, aghast but still studious, in shock but still managing to be studious.*
Noble two: *bored, bored and slightly curious, aghast, horrified, angry and horrified.*
Noble three: *thinking of other things and happy, mind drawn in and curious, shocked, inquisitive, delighted in both his new found intrest and the discomfort of his peers.*

Well, I haven't laughed that much in a long while! Thanks a lot :D
You never cease to amaze me with each page. Even if I can't wait to see the future of the whole storyline, I'm patient and I will be there no matter how long it takes. Each time I see a submission of yours, it's a little moment of joy!

Oh boy just like kobolds!
....
Seriously though, congrats on doing so dang well and getting this far though! seriously, I like to pride myself on at least only being 50% lazy with my art, but even at that rate I can't imagine getting a small comic done, let alone accomplishing what you have! The idea that people can knock out ideas in a continuous order like a comic requires, and keep it all working is always dang inspiring, and I'm sure your fanbase is only going to grow more and more with time!
Love your work, and can't wait to see where you go, and congrats with knocking down the beast of student loans a bit more!

It really is a test of endurance sometimes! Although with as much as I want to draw and share each page, it's a whole lot easier to stay motivated.
And as for the loans... I just realized that when I'm done with them, I'll immediately start getting to keep more of my income, so it's kinda like... getting a raise?

You'd be surprised how rare it is for someone to eloquently suggest I might enjoy their comic. Seriously, using caps is a step above most.
You had me hooked by page 3. Similarities to kobolds only a minor aspect of that, you weave humour into a story that's also got depth and brewing intrigues burning slowly. I love that. Don't ever stop, please!

Well the initial inspiration for yinglets was "low-level scrappy pack-monster species with a basic society," which goblins and kobolds definitely fall into as well, so I always knew there'd be some overlap! Regardless of the species in particular, I needed something that behaved similarly to fill the role in this story.
I have one species of lizardbirds that, ancestrally, used to have hemipenes- but since those are an adaptation for quadrupeds with wide-spread legs, once they evolve to be bipedal humanoids the males wind up with one of them becoming a vestigial little nub...
I.e., males that have clits.

you reading this made me think how awkward sex ed would have been back in school if we had to learn about how other races had sex as well.
I'm also amazed that the professor here hasn't tried to see what Kass's genataila looks like seeing how on the black board it's nothing but a bunch of question marks

The silent interaction between the students at the end really helps make this. Also, nice job on their house crests, or that's what I assume the banners on their desks are.
I'm glad that the outpouring of support for you has motivated you! OoPs has some really great worldbuilding to go with funny humor and some great characters. Keep it up!

Yep! Donate enough money, get a special desk at the front of the class.
And there really is a direct "I like your comic" = Motivation dynamic here. I took a couple 2-3 month long breaks between comics at first when there was only a dozen or so readers, but after page 13 (Kass gets scavvy), I just couldn't go too long without drawing another page, knowing there are people out there who want more. Not in a "oh man I feel pressured" way, but rather, "oh boy I can't wait to draw this next page and see what people get out of it."
So all's well.

It is good cause you enjoy your work. Lots of people enjoy a good story regardless of what the structure may be and I had become a fan quite early on. Always looking forward to your next submittion but please don't hesitate to rest and take care of what is important when you feel the need to. Don't let your art feel like a chore.
Swordfight! Swordfight! Swordfight! Fucking it man!

You're awesome. ♥ I always look forward to your updates, and am always so happy for you to see you're improving, and know you're proud of your work. Nothing makes me happier than seeing an artist I look up to practically flourish. ♥♥♥
Good luck with your debts, and everything else in the way. We understand how it is, and whether it be this, or something else totally unrelated, we all hope you get to the point where you can do what YOU want to do, without anything getting in the way.
All the best and all the ♥s eeeeeeeeeeeee!

Haha, thanks a bunch! This whole comic thing has really been a positive, enjoyable growing experience, and I'm super-appreciative of that. Maybe it's just because I've seen all sorts of internet drama in the past and have a good idea of how to avoid it, but a big part of it is definitely that I strive to put lots of effort into it, yet not take things super-seriously.
Seems to be working so far, at least! So I'm gonna keep that up.

Oh, don't think I haven't considered it!
Honestly, the only thing stopping me is that I feel kinda uncomfortable taking peoples' money when I'm uncertain I can produce steady releases and/or quality. Which many people probably don't care about at all, but hey, that's my brain for ya!

You won't get anything if you don't ask for it. Also Patreon may tighten restrictions, I notice most places in general do, so there's some benefit to signing up early. And who knows, maybe you'll eventually make enough that this can replace your day job, if you work one. (If you don't yet have a day job but will have to eventually have one, then I recommend get started on replacing it now, before it even happens. Those things will kill you! :)
This reminds me so much of that Monty Python bit... LOL

Well, we've all been wondering about this for a while, so thanks for filling us in. Let the Rule 34 start pouring in.

Man, that sketch is getting referenced a lot with this page! And rightfully so.
And yeah, even though this comic's always been meant to be non-explicit, I couldn't exactly say "Hay this species has a peculiar biological feature" and not explain it. For most "custom species" creations, stuff like that is listed on the first spec sheet along with all the other bits and pieces, but a comic is a very different format, and so required some... special considerations when explaining the dirty bits.

Well hey, I could always use more honor! And yes; money would always be nice, but I can't stand the idea of a paywall coming between my work and people who might otherwise read and enjoy it. So I might make some special pay-content someday, but the main comic will always be free for all.
Haha, thanks! I really never expected them to get this much attention; they were originally just one of several species in the comic! But there's no question that they're the main attraction now.
And it really does make me happy that it's inspired others to have fun with their own ideas about them and get all creative, like with your comic.

Your comics are some great stuff and I'm glad you're getting the popularity you deserve. I checked it out after seeing a bunch of SilDre 's yinglet fanart and was hooked.
I'd definitely support you on Patreon if you started one up. If you're worried about not having the output to justify a monthly pledge, I think they can be set up on a per-update basis?

The more i hear about Yinglet's the more i just wanna sit on a bench and toss clams to them and watch them fight over who gets it. Just siting there feeding the rat birds and getting a show. (If someone did such a thing what are the chances of them fighting over the clams?)
P.S. Any chance of getting the full story on how he got this information? It sounds like an interesting story.

So I just recently found this comic.. I have seen yinglets on and off in the fandom for a while now and didn't know the source. I found your artwork last week and clicking through I found out there's a story behind them? And culture and character info and.. wow! All of this is awesome. I just thought you might like to know that some folks like your characters so much that I have even seen folks wandering around Tapestries Furry Muck role-playing as random yinglets from time to time. I see fan art by other artists of yinglet characters.. I have even seen some people commission other artists to draw their yinglet characters they like to RP as. They seem to be fairly popular.
So what is it that I said just a week ago (page #37)? It is eerily coincidental. I swear! I didn't skip ahead. Not the specific details I was hoping– I mean, expecting, but I think it gets the point across to the children. Albeit, in a censored but still traumatizing (or absolutely hilarious) way. Gosh, I wish I had had a Sex Ed class.
I always find it insane that you say you didn't expect much attention, yet you've gone into so much detail about the world you've built and races you've made to the point where you know exactly what yinglets are; what they do; where they live; what they eat; how they hunt; how they talk; their sort of governing system; their personalities; their relationships with humans and between each other; the amount of diversity they can have in how they look, dress, accessorize, and through their various possible mutations; etc. Insane! Call it a passion project if you will.
The notion of what the attention has made you must be mind-boggling indeed. You effect people in ways you may not imagine. For instance, every person who reads this comic devotes apart of his or her time to do so. I specifically look forward to reading a page every night, and thus have made a routine of it. You have me everyday thinking, "Man, I wonder what's gonna happen next," and I keep guessing. When I do read, it isn't a waste of time. I thoroughly enjoy the comedy and the crushing existential crisis that befalls our main character(s). Huh. Who would've thought those two things could go together?
I don't know who I am to you. I don't know if that matters. A month or two ago, I didn't exist, but here I am know commenting nearly everyday with my thoughts and musings.
But seriously, five years?! It took me five years to find your comic? Well, it's more like four and a half, but seriously!

Haha, thanks! Yeah, when putting this setting together, I wanted to do it pretty thoroughly, regardless of however many people might or might not have ever seen it. As a sort of exercise in worldbuilding and such, ya know?
And I'm really glad you've been enjoying this story so much, and putting the effort in to pace yourself! I've been enjoying your comments as you've worked through the pages bit by bit, and ended up re-reading things myself because of it.
And hey, just think of the 4.5 years not as missing anything, but rather giving yourself a good chunk of backlog to read through without the waits between pages : D

I know. It's like a matter of always doing your best even if no one is around to see, and I admire your initiative to be the change you want to see in the world as you have said. It must be a good feeling.
I'm glad I've affected you in a positive way as you have affected me.
I once didn't pace myself when reading a good story, which was divided into chapters, on DevianArt. When I got caught up, not only did I realize that I have to start waiting, I would have to start waiting indefinitely because the writer apparently hasn't updated the story for several years! And to leave off with a cliffhanger of all things.
I've never thought of it that way. Fate was just waiting for the right moment to say, "Here's a good read," so I don't take what I have for granted. However, I can be patient. The only wait I can't and won't tolerate is slow internet.
