"Are you angry at me?" Venti quietly asked as the two walked to the car. The night air was cool, but Art had been acting much cooler.
"No, I'm just a bit disappointed in myself," Art replied just as quietly.
Venti stopped, confusion blanketing his expression. "Why? Your family seems to like me, the ones I met, I mean."
"I...well, I didn't expect you to like Eddie."
"He's an okay kid. I didn't even know you two were related. There's not much of a resemblance."
Art leaned back against the car once they approached it. "I know, he's a big lion. He gets that from Dad's side of the family. Me? I got Mama's good looks." Art began playing with his beaded mane. "It's just that Eddie's always teasing me because I'm so much smaller than him. I told him I knew someone who made him look small, so..." His voice trailed away, and he felt ashamed.
"So you invited me to dinner just to show him up, huh?" Venti's voice was neutral, and for a moment Art was afraid the jackal was starting to grow angry.
"Pretty much. Then it turns out you two already know each other." Art looked up at Venti, and found the jackal's expression was as bland as his tone. "I'm sorry I invited you over for the wrong reasons."
"It's okay, Art," Venti placed his hands on the lion's shoulders, rubbing them lightly. "I don't mind you showing me off, just don't feel you have to be sneaky about it, okay?"
Art nodded, then leaned in to hug Venti. "I'm also sorry for making you believe I was angry at you."
"Now, now, one apology a day is fine enough. It's hard to admit when you're sorry, no need to do it twice." Venti lifted up Art's chin, kissing the air between them. "Love you."
"I love you too."
Venti smiled, nodding congenially. "Good. Let's go home. I'm in a mood to snuggle a lion."
On the drive back, Art received a text from his brother Eddie. The message was three simple words that did make Art feel justified in having Venti over for Sunday Dinner:
I felt small.

oh....wait but...ohh....wow is that how adults are supposed to handle situations? actually admiting to faults, accepting them when they happen, and truly forgiving one another if it does? oh snap i have alot to learn about adulthood! well played Greg, i only wished there were more understanding people in this world like Venti and Art. Great Job!
