God Speed John Glenn
The last of the original Mercury Seven astronauts passed away this morning. John Glenn lead a full adventerous life.
One of my original heros. I had to draw this up for him.
And if I didn't,
Mavraster would stomp my ass into goo!

Yaay!
When I heard that Mr. Glenn was being admitted to a hospital, I really had this feeling that it would be IT.
I'm sad, yes, but for selfish reasons because I'll miss him like all of the US astronauts that have died over the years, on or off the job, because they were indeed willing to put their lives on the line, and for the time, there were no computers like what we have now, these were SKILLED PILOTS. Their brains were supercomputers!
Astronaut John Glenn had a very rich life, and I wish to celebrate this life of his.
Very nice, Thomas.
Indeed,
Godspeed, John Glenn.

When I was a kid I had a tin toy of a Mercury Capsule. And printed on the side of it was "Frendship 7" I played with that toy until it came completely apart from use. It was one of my favorite toys.
And now the seven have been reunited to explore the universe. They have truly gone "To infinity and beyond!"

The poem "High Flight" fits so well.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
Godspeed Colonel.

Truly fits.
BTW, as an aside, somewhere once, in one of the flying mags, some one did an analysis of the poem of how many different FAA regs were violated in the piece, on a line by line basis! Don't remember where I saw it, but it was funny, in a somewhat macabre way.

I've met (and talked with) Michael Collins from Apollo 11, Harrison Schmitt from Apollo 17, and a few Space Shuttle members. I've also met and talked with John Young, Shuttle Pilot since it first was launched.
Unfortunately, I never met with and/or chatted with John Glenn. A shame, the stories that he might have told...
God Speed, Col. Glenn.

When I was still a pup, I had a GI Joe Mercury capsule (still have it...) I played with that, again and again. There was a 45rpm record too, that transcribed Glenn's radio comms in Friendship 7. I listened to that so much I can still, some 50 years later, recite it all.
God Bless, and Godspeed, Juohn Glenn...
