While certainly far less sinister in tone, this painting really makes me think of "The Intruder" By Andrew Wyeth.
I think it's just canine in the-great-expanse-of-nature-- in this one it's more of an "Oh the places you'll go" feel than "there are things you will never know and that's terrifying" feel.
